Gokyo Lake Trek is a fantastic choice for those who prefer a less crowded trekking experience but still seek renowned views. It includes stunning sights such as the Gokyo Lakes, panoramic views from Gokyo Ri, and the longest glacier in the Himalayas, offering a less crowded alternative treks to the Everest Base Camp Trek. 

The Gokyo Lake Trek, also known as the Gokyo Valley Trek in the Everest region, takes you to the stunning Gokyo Lakes located in the Gokyo Valley of Nepal. The turquoise waters are breathtaking, especially when viewed from Gokyo Ri at sunrise. Trekkers can reach Gokyo from Namche Bazaar by hiking north or via Cho La Pass or Renjo La Pass.

The Gokyo Lake is a holy lake to Hindus and Buddhist religions so many of the sacred trekker's trek to this lake in the month of August on the occasion of Janai Purnima festival. There are five main lakes to visit but Longponga Tso, Taujung Tso, and Gokyo Tso are the most beautiful lakes around the area. There is one most popular viewpoint called “Gokyo Ri” to view Mount Everest, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, Makalu which are eight thousander mountains. 

The trek begins with a short Mountain flight to Lukla from Kathmandu, and you will trek to Namche Bazaar. Namche Bazaar is the gateway to Everest Region trekking as well as it is the capital town of Sherpa people. From Namche, the trail is split from the Classic Everest Base Camp trekking trail to Gokyo Lakes through the villages of Dole, Machhermo. 

The trail is adventurous with rocky, icy landscape through the wild and peaceful environment as well as exploring traditional Sherpa communities, ancient monasteries, and spellbinding scenes of natural beauty. After reaching the Gokyo Lake you may observe the best scenery and way back to Lukla. If you have enough time, you can trek to crossing Renjo La Pass to Lukla or Chola Pass to Lukla.

Beautiful Gokyo Valley 

Gokyo Valley is located between Khumbu Valley and Thame Valley, starting from Mount Cho Oyu Base Camp and extending down to Phungi Tanga, following the Dudh Kosi River. The valley's main settlement is at the third lake of Gokyo, situated at an altitude of around 4,800 meters above sea level.

Namche Bazaar is a key stop on the trek to Gokyo. From Namche, it takes approximately 14 hours to reach Gokyo. The lakes in Gokyo Valley form the world’s highest freshwater lake system, designated as a Ramsar site (wetlands of international importance) and considered sacred by both Hindus and Buddhists.

Gokyo Valley features a range of landscapes, from lush forests and meadows to rugged high-altitude terrain and snow-capped peaks. The area is home to diverse flora and fauna, including rare Himalayan wildlife such as the Himalayan tahr and musk deer.

Walk Safely during the Gokyo Lakes Trek

Safety is crucial while trekking in the Himalayan region and the same applies to the Gokyo Lakes Trek. Always walk cautiously and carefully. The trails in the Himalayas can be slippery and rocky, especially during rain or snow time. This is particularly true at the end of May, the beginning of September, and during the winter months of December, January, and February. In higher elevations, snow and ice can make the trails even more challenging. Melting snow can cause paths to become slippery and muddy, so take extra care when walking near cliffs.

During the main trekking season, the trails will be more crowded with trekkers, guides, porters, yaks, and donkeys. At times, you may need to stand on the safe side of the trail and wait when crossing bridges or navigating narrow spaces. Additionally, be cautious of wild animals and yaks, as they may graze above the trail, which can sometimes cause stones to fall. Always stay alert in such areas—avoid stopping and keep moving if you're below them.

It's also important to stay away from riversides, streams, and areas near waterfalls, as these can pose additional hazards. By following these safety tips, you'll have a safer trek. Your guide will also brief you on these precautions during the Gokyo Lakes Trek.

Preparation for Gokyo Lake Trek

The 14-day itinerary for the Gokyo Lake Trek, from your arrival to your departure home, is a relatively challenging and rewarding adventure due to its remote, long duration and high-altitude terrains. The journey takes you from 2,800 meters to 5,360 meters at Gokyo Ri, through farmlands, terraces, diverse landscapes, narrow trails, forests, and rocky paths. The trek involves ascents and descents, requiring 5 to 8 hours of daily walking. Therefore, careful preparation is necessary before planning the trip to ensure a safe, memorable, successful, and enjoyable experience of a lifetime.

Good physical fitness, hiking training, mental flexibility, and determination are essential. You should build endurance and strength through activities such as walking, day hiking, running, biking, jogging, stretching and swimming. Booking your trip with an experienced and reputable trekking agency and hiring an experienced guide is also important. Additionally, packing the right gear suitable for any season, while keeping it light and necessary, is crucial before participating in the Gokyo Lake Trek. 

Another important aspect of preparation is to seek medical advice from a doctor before travel, especially if you have respiratory concerns or other health issues such as food or drink allergies. Travel insurance is also essential; we recommend obtaining insurance that covers emergency evacuation during the Gokyo Lake Trek, as the trek takes place in a remote area where emergency medical care may be difficult to access. Important Note for the trip:

  • During your pre-trip meeting in Kathmandu, we provide you with a free T-shirt and a warm cap (beanie), as well as a refundable duffel bag for packing your trekking gear.
  • We assign one porter for every two trekkers, so the duffel bag should weigh around 10 to 12 kg, which is carried by the porter throughout the trek. Additionally, we can arrange other working team members according to your requirements.
  • For the Lukla flight, the baggage weight limit is typically a maximum of 15 kilograms (33 pounds) per person, including both carry-on and checked baggage. This allowance is usually sufficient for a 9 to 17 day trek.
  • You must have your own special daypack with a waterproof cover for carrying your daily necessities things like cash, necessary papers, a water bottle or bladder, sunglass, mobile phone, power bank, a camera, toiletries, sunscreen, lip guard, a notebook, light clothing, etc. 
  • The guide will check your trekking gear and give you suggestions on what to pack and what not to pack. Any unnecessary items (non-trekking items) can be stored at the hotel or our office in Kathmandu.
  • A down jacket and a sleeping bag are required for trekking in the Nepal Himalayas. The sleeping bag should be rated for temperatures between -10 to 20 degrees Celsius, depending on the trekking route. If you don't have either of these items, you can rent them in Kathmandu for USD 2 per day. Please note that in case of loss or damage, you will be required to pay the cost of USD 100 per item.
  • Every day, the guide will brief you about the walk, nature, food, accommodation, culture, and other aspects of the trek. It's important to listen to and follow the local rules and guidelines provided by the guide.
  • Respect locals' privacy before photographing them or their children and appreciate the local culture and customs. Always walk together with your guide and stand in a safe place while animals are passing. Do not smoke or drink alcohol at elevations above 3000 meters.

Our trekking guide will be transferred to you at the domestic terminal of the Tribhuvan International Airport by privet vehicles to depart for the Lukla flight. You will board a flight and fly to Lukla with your trekking guide. You will be enjoying the scenic flight for about 35 minutes and land on Lukla airstrip (Tensing-Hillary Airport). You will meet your trekking porter and be introduced. They are waiting for you at Lukla airport. Treks start from Lukla after the Pasang Lhamo memorial Gate, through Lukla town. Our trekking trail drops down to the Toktok Village through the Chheplung, Thadokosi, Ghat Phakding, and somewhere forest as well. From the trail, you will see the wonderful Mountain View of Kusum Kanguru and Kongde peak.

From Phakding, the Everest Base Camp trek goes continues north. There are a few uphill and downhill climbs, through the forest of pine and rhododendron, suspension bridges, and local Sherpa village will follow and take to you, Monjo. Monjo is the gateway of the Sagarmatha National Park to Everest Base Camp Trek. Our trekking guide will manage the entrance fee of the Sagarmatha Notational Park. From the Monju Gate trail continue drops down to the bridge crossing the Dudh Koshi River and you will get the Jorsalle village.  Your trekking trail continues following the north and crossing another bridge of the same river and following the river bank trail until the large Dovan. There is a very high bridge on this river, we have to cross and we will climb into a forest of the pine tree on lot Zigzag trail until Namche Bazaar. Before getting to the Namche Bazaar we will see and enjoy the first view of Mt Everest and other lot mountains.

Namche Bazaar is a beautiful town, with an elevation is 3440m. We have to stay two nights for acclimatization for further altitude. During the daytime, we have to hike up somewhere for acclimatization. There are two places to hike, one is Thame village and another is Khumjung village. Your trekking guide decided on your plan for the hike up. After breakfast, you will visit either Thame Sherpa village or Khumjung Sherpa village. From both sides, you will be enjoying panoramic Mountain Views, pine forests, mani wall, Gompa (Buddhist monasteries), and Sherpa village. And remain to your time can spend visiting the National Park Head office and Museum or relaxing in a hotel.

After having breakfast from Namche, you will follow the trail by Chhorkang. you will walk the north side and past a memorial Chorten to Tenzing Norgay. From there you can enjoy the beautiful panorama view of Kusum kangaroo, Thamserku, Khandega, Amadablam, Lhotse, Everest, Nuptse, and Tawaboche before getting to Kyanjuma. From there, the trail is ascend left to Mongla pass and descends to Phortse Thanga and again hikes uphill to Dole through the Rhododendron and birch forest.

We will leave from Dole to reach Machhermo with gradual hiking up. That day is not a long day but you will feel a bit of difficulty walking because Machharmo is lying at the 4470-meter height. You can observe the stunning view of Cho Oyu, Kantega, and Thamserku and chance to see wildlife.

Today is the important day of the trek to get to Gokyo. After breakfast, you will hike gently up to Phanka for a short break and trail leading to Gokyo Lake beside the Ngozumpa Glacier. We will be capturing the varied scenery of the Gokyo Valley as Gokyo lakes, neighboring peaks of Tibet, and Cho Oyu.

That day is two options for hiking such as Gokyo Ri or fifth Gokyo Lake. You can decide with your guide about those options. Both places are wonderful for hiking for magnificent mountain views. If you want to climb Gokyo Ri, you have to climb before breakfast (for a sunrise View) or after breakfast to Gokyo Ri for panoramic views of many mountains such as Mt. Everest, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Makalu, Mt. Cho-Oyu and many other snow peak mountains.

You will have breakfast in Namche and you will continue downhill to a large bridge from Namche. After the cross large bridge of the Dudh Kosi River and you will follow the trail on the bank of this river until Phakding, where you did spend the first night on this trek.  Accommodation on the Gokyo Lake Trek primarily consists of tea houses, which are simple lodges offering basic facilities. Rooms typically have twin beds with blankets, and some may have mattresses, but be prepared for basic, no-frills accommodation. Bathrooms are usually shared and basic, with Western-style toilets and sometimes squat toilets. Hot showers may be available for a fee. Dining rooms are communal, and meals are typically served from a set menu. You can expect dishes like dal bhat (lentil soup with rice), pasta, noodles, and local specialties like momo (dumplings).

The Gokyo Lake Trek spans 14 days, from your arrival to your departure from Nepal, as part of our package. For our 14-day itinerary, the trek cost ranges from US$ 1,200 to US$ 1,800, depending on the group size. This cost covers transportation, accommodation, meals, guide, porter, and the necessary permits for the trip. However, it does not include emergency evacuation, travel insurance, drinks, trekking equipment, or extra luxury accommodations.

For the Gokyo Lakes Trek, good physical fitness is essential, as you'll be walking 5 to 8 hours a day in high-altitude areas. It is highly recommended to start a fitness program at least 6 weeks before your trip, focusing on building general stamina and strengthening specific leg muscle groups. There's no better training than hiking with a rucksack, so the best advice is to get out into the hills as often as possible. You'll likely be carrying around 5 kilos in your day pack, so this is a good weight to train with. 

Gokyo Ri is the best viewpoint to witness a panoramic view of the Himalayas, including Everest, Makalu, Lhotse, Cho Oyu, and many other snow-capped peaks. In addition to the breathtaking mountain views, you can also see the largest glacier in Nepal, Ngozumpa, and the stunning Gokyo Lakes. While Everest may not always appear as the highest mountain from other vantage points, when viewed from Gokyo Ri, its towering presence is unmistakable. 

Everest Base Camp is one of the most popular trekking destinations, and you can combine it with the Gokyo Lakes Trek via the Cho La Pass. This combination trek is usually done in a clockwise direction. However, if you have enough time and are interested in doing both routes, after reaching Namche, it is better to take a counter-clockwise route through Cho La Pass to reach the Gokyo Valley.

Reach to Lukla by Flight

Lukla is a small town and the starting point for all treks to the Everest region, including the Gokyo Lake Trek. It serves as a gateway with a small airstrip to Everest region trekking, and there is no road access from Kathmandu to Lukla. Trekkers must either fly from Kathmandu or Ramechhap or trek from Phaplu or Jiri. Regular flights to Lukla are operated by Tara Air, Summit Air, and Sita Air from Kathmandu or Ramechhap during the main trekking season.

During peak trekking months—March, April, May, September, October, and November—flights to Lukla may operate from Ramechhap/Manthali due to Nepal's aviation rules aimed at avoiding congestion and air traffic delays. Ramechhap Airport is approximately 144 kilometers east of Kathmandu and requires a 3 to 5-hour drive by private vehicles from Kathmandu.

Regarding luggage, there is a weight limit of 15 kg per passenger, including your hand-carry bag. It is advisable to keep your luggage under this limit to avoid extra charges. In case of an overload, your bag may be transported on a subsequent flight, so you may need to wait for a few hours at Lukla to receive the luggage. 

Be prepared for potential delays or cancellations, as weather conditions can impact flights to and from Lukla. If flights are delayed or canceled, you may need to add a few extra days to your itinerary. We will do our best to adjust the itinerary as needed. If you do not have extra time before or after your trekking itinerary, you might consider taking a helicopter close to Lukla or shifting your trekking route to another region. Arranging for one or two additional days in your trip is highly recommended to accommodate potential flight delays or cancellations and to ensure you can board your pre-planned international flight.

Best time to Gokyo Lake Trek

The best time for Gokyo Lake Trek is during the pre-monsoon (spring) and post-monsoon (autumn) seasons in Nepal. These periods offer the most favorable weather conditions for trekking in Nepal Himalayas.

Both seasons offer good weather conditions, but April, May, October, and November are considered the best months for the Gokyo Lake Trek. These months provide suitable conditions for trekking without significant hazards. However, keep in mind that the weather in the mountains can be changeable, so it's always advisable to be prepared for sudden changes regardless of the season.

Choosing the best time depends on your preferences, availability, and tolerance for crowds, as both spring and autumn have their unique advantages.

  • Spring (March to May):

Spring is the best and most favorable season for trekking to Gokyo – Lake. The weather is generally stable, with clear skies, mild temperatures, warm days, and less rain and snow. The visibility is excellent for mountain views, and the trails are often busy with trekkers. The trails are adorned with blooming rhododendrons and other wildflowers, adding vibrant colors to the landscape. 

  • Autumn (September to November):

Autumn is considered the peak trekking season, making it one of the best times for the Gokyo Lake Trek. During autumn (post-monsoon), the air is crisp and clear, offering some of the best visibility of the mountains. This season provides clear skies, stable weather, and excellent visibility. The temperatures are pleasant during the day, perfect for trekking. While the trails might be busier compared to other times, the views of the Himalayas are breathtaking. Additionally, you can experience local festivals like Dashain and Tihar, adding cultural richness to your Gokyo Lake trek.

  • Winter (Dec to Feb) & Summer (June to August):

These seasons are generally not recommended for the Gokyo Lake Trek due to extreme cold, snowfall, and potential avalanche risks near the Gokyo Lakes. However, if you wish to avoid crowds and enjoy some alone time with nature, you can undertake this trip during winter (January and February), but be prepared for very cold temperatures. During the monsoon, heavy rainfall, clouds, and blocked trails and mountain views make trekking more challenging and less enjoyable.

Gokyo Lake Trek Difficulty

The difficulty level of the Gokyo Lake 11 days Trek from Kathmandu to Kathmandu is considered challenging and rewarding adventure due to its durations of the trek, remote location, variety of terrain, including steep ascents and descents, rocky paths, and possibly some snow-covered sections, especially around the higher area on Gokyo Lakes and Gokyo Ri. Weather conditions in the Gokyo Lake Trekking route are always changeable, with cold temperatures and the possibility of snowfall, especially at higher altitudes. So this makes the trek physically challenging.

There is no road access to Lukla, making it difficult to reach, as it is the starting and ending point of the trek. Lukla is situated at an altitude of 2,800 meters above sea level. The trek reaches Gokyo Lake at 4,800 meters and at Gokyo Ri at 5,360 meters.  The trail is well-maintained, but above then Namche, it becomes rocky with a mix of uphill and downhill terrain at progressively increasing altitudes. Daily walking distances range from 5 to 8 hours in high-altitude terrains, which present another challenge. Good fitness is required, but maintaining good health, physical fitness, and mental preparedness is highly recommended for ascending to this high altitudes.

The trek to Gokyo Lake 11 days in the mountains is definitely not simple due to its high altitude. Some sections of the trail are relatively challenging, with steep slopes and rocky terrain. Acclimatization day to reduce the Altitude Sickness for the Trip

An acclimatization day is necessary to reduce the risk of high-altitude sickness during the 11-day Gokyo Lake Trek. This trek takes place in a remote, high-altitude area of the Everest Region, starting at 2,800 meters and reaching Gokyo Ri at 5,360 meters. Along the way, trekkers pass through beautiful Sherpa villages, forests, and other high-altitude landscapes with rocky and icy path. As you ascend, oxygen levels and air pressure decrease compared to sea level. Once you reach an altitude above 3,500 meters, you may experience symptoms of altitude sickness, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, loss of appetite, tiredness, dizziness, and sleeplessness.

Namche Bazaar is designated as our acclimatization rest day in the itinerary for this Trip. This rest day help prevent altitude sickness and allow you to adapt to the environment. If you experience any symptoms of altitude sickness during Gokyo Lake Trek, it is important to address them immediately to avoid difficulties in completing the trip. To prevent these issues, you should follow your guide's instructions, as they are knowledgeable about high-altitude sickness as well as follow the itinerary closely, as proper acclimatization helps your body adapt to higher elevations. Additionally, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, eat a well-balanced diet with sufficient carbohydrates, maintain a comfortable pace, and avoid alcohol and sedatives.

When ascending on the 3,500 meters, be honest with your guide about how you are feeling. Your guide will advise you to walk slowly and may suggest that you sleep at a lower altitude before ascending further. This practice, known as acclimatization, helps reduce the risk of altitude sickness. However, if you continue to feel unwell despite following these recommendations, you should return to a lower altitude.

Requires Permits & Permits Cost for the Trek 

The Gokyo Lake Trekking route is situated within the Sagarmatha National Park in the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality in the Everest region of Nepal. Therefore, you need to purchase a Sagarmatha National Park entrance permit and a Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality entrance permit. Another required permit is the TIMS (Trekkers Information Management System) card, which is for your safety and security, as it helps keep track of trekkers' whereabouts in the region. Electricity and Charging Facilities

Most teahouses along the Gokyo Lake trekking trail have electricity, but availability may be limited beyond Lukla, Phakding, and Namche due to reliance on solar panels. Coverage can be irregular or non-existent in more remote sections, especially at higher altitudes.  If you plan to use your mobile phone, it's advisable to purchase a local SIM card from Ncell or Nepal Telecom in Kathmandu. This can provide better coverage in some areas along the trek but not reliable for mobile data.

Teahouses and lodges provide internet access for an extra charge, typically through a prepaid card system, though it may not always be available due to weather conditions or technical issues. In places like Lukla and Phakding, the quality and speed are generally good, and internet access may even be offered free of charge. High altitude sickness information

Mountain sickness is another name for high altitude sickness. You must be aware of high altitude sickness symptoms since they arise rapidly if you hike or ascend to a higher elevation. Here are some details if you're curious as to why it occurs. The air pressure is the main cause of altitude sickness. Your body needs time to adapt to the shift in air pressure when you travel to higher elevations since the air pressure decreases and there is less oxygen present. 4) Prevention for High Altitude Sickness

Important keys to preventing of High Altitude Sickness are:

Climb the mountain gradually. 

Stop every 2,000 feet (600 meters) of climb above 8,000 feet (2,400 meters) and one or two nights sleep there.

Sleep at a lower altitude when possible.

Make sure that you have the ability to quickly descend if needed.

Learn how to recognize early symptoms of mountain sickness.

If you plan on climbing quickly, or climbing to a high altitude, ask your provider about medicines that may help.

If you are at risk for a low red blood cell count (anemia), ask your provider if your planned trip is safe. Also ask if an iron supplement is right for you. Anemia lowers the amount of oxygen in your blood. This makes you more likely to have mountain sickness.

5) While climbing, you should follow these rules:

Drink plenty of water

Climb slowly.

Take it easy

Do not drink alcohol.

Eat regular meals that are high in carbohydrates.

Sleep lower elevation 

Take a medication (diomax) according to doctor

We recently completed Gokyo trekking from High Pass Adventure. It was an amazing experience from start to finish; from excellent email communication to incredible professional service. Purna and his team did a great job in dealing with the unpredictable and advising us with alternatives that allowed us to start with trekking. The first attempt to fly out to Lukla was unsuccessful due to cloudy weather over Lukla, the next day on our 2nd attempt to fly out, again we couldn't due to the same reason, however they hired a jeep for us and we managed to start the trek a day later.
