A devastating flood struck the Gyirong (Kerung) region of Tibet, China, on Tuesday, 8th July 2025, following continuous heavy rainfall. The disaster caused severe damage to infrastructure, including the Friendship Bridge, numerous vehicles, and tragically led to human casualties. Consequently, all cross-border movement for trade and tourism between Nepal and China has been completely suspended. The Nepal–China Friendship Bridge—an important gateway for trade, tourism, and the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra—was heavily damaged.
Therefore, the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is now being rerouted through the Kodari–Zhangmu border. This border was a regular crossing point before the 2015 earthquake and has now been reopened after the flooding disrupted the Rasuwagadhi–Kerung route. The distance from Kathmandu to Kodari is about 115 km, taking approximately 5–6 hours by private vehicle, though travel time may be longer at times due to landslides blocking the road.
From the Kodari–Zhangmu border to Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, the itinerary only changes from Kathmandu to Saga. Instead of staying one night at Rasuwa Gadhi and two nights at Kerung, the Kodari route includes one night at the Kodari border and two nights at Nyalam, before continuing to Saga the next day.

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via the overland route is a sacred pilgrimage that draws thousands of devotees and adventure seekers to the remote Himalayas each year. This journey offers a unique blend of spiritual fulfillment and breathtaking natural beauty, especially during the auspicious full moon period. In this guide, we’ll explore the cost of the overland route and reveal the best times to undertake this divine yatra, with special focus on full moon departures for an enhanced spiritual experience.
The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is a spiritual pilgrimage to Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar, located in Tibet, China, and the birthplace of Lord Shiva. This journey is considered one of the most sacred in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Bon. Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar are the main highlights of the journey because Mount Kailash is believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva. It is a sacred peak that is not climbed by pilgrims but circumnavigated, and Lake Manasarovar is a high-altitude lake considered holy, believed to purify sins and grant spiritual enlightenment.
The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra tours go through high-altitude landscapes but are accessible with modern road transportation in Nepal and Tibet but some time can block the road due to bad weather. This 16-day long trip, filled with the spirit of adventure, begins in Kathmandu. We offer 'fixed departure tours' for the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, where any individual can join alone or with family or friends.
The trip starts from Kathmandu with a scenic drive to Kerung in Tibet, crossing the Nepalese border at Rasuwagadi. After Kerung, your tour continues by tourist bus to make the long drive through Tibet simpler and easier. You will reach Kailash Manasarovar through the cities of Saga and Purang, enjoying the scenic beauty of the Tibetan high-altitude landscape. Upon reaching Manasarovar, you will be blessed with a holy bath and a Parikrama (circumambulation) of Mount Kailash to complete your religious journey before returning to Kathmandu.
Our experienced and tourist-friendly Kailash Yatra tour leaders, guides, Sherpas, chefs, and kitchen staff ensure that your trip to Kailash Manasarovar is safe and comfortable by providing the best service, delicious food, and comfortable accommodation. Our team has many years of experience in this field. If you want to join one of our Kailash Yatra group tours, simply fill out the booking form.
Our Kailash Mansarovar Yatra tour itinerary starts from Kathmandu after valley sightseeing and ends in Kathmandu after completing the journey via Rasuwagadhi and Kerung. On the first day, the tour drives to Syabru Besi or Rasuwagadhi by tourist bus for an overnight stay. The next morning, we will cross the Tibet-China border, and there will be a bit of a queue for processing the visa check and stamp. After that, a Tibetan guide and driver will receive us and drive to Kerung for an overnight stay.
Kerung is the best place for acclimatization, and normally, we stay there for 2 nights. Most pilgrims use this route and spend 2 nights there. Then, we go to Saga town through the Tibetan highland plateau with scenic views of the surrounding landscape. We stay overnight at Saga town and drive to Lake Mansarovar through Dongba and Purang.
At Lake Mansarovar, you will spend one night and perform puja and take a bath in the morning before driving to Darchen, the base of Mount Kailash. People believe that taking a holy bath is a religious practice that can also provide blessings and clarity. From there, we drive to Yama Dwar, the starting point for the Parikrama (circumambulation) of Mount Kailash. On that day, you will walk 3 to 4 hours to reach Derapuk for an overnight stay, which is on the north face of Mount Kailash. The walk from Derapuk to Zudulpuk is challenging due to crossing the Dolma La pass. The next day, we arrive in Darchen, which connects to its base.
From Darchen, we drive all the way back to Kathmandu, spending one night at Saga and another night at Kerung before crossing the border and arriving in Kathmandu. After arriving in Kathmandu, your Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is complete, marking a memorable chapter in your life.
The best time for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra during a full moon is typically from May to September, especially on the night of the full moon (Purnima). This period coincides with major festivals such as the Saga Dawa Festival in Tibet, which celebrates the birth, enlightenment, and death of Lord Buddha — always held on a full moon day in May or June. Another significant event is Shravan Purnima (August), also known as Janai Purnima, which is an auspicious occasion for Hindus. Many believe that Lord Shiva resides at Mount Kailash, and full moon days during the month of Shravan are considered deeply sacred. That’s why many pilgrims — both Hindus and Buddhists — from around the world time their yatra to coincide with these dates, creating a vibrant spiritual gathering. For other travelers, the full moon illuminates the stark and dramatic landscape of Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar, offering a spectacular and serene nighttime view.
Many pilgrims choose full moon dates for deeper spiritual experience. In 2026, full moon days fall on:
Another option to visit Kailash Mansarovar is via Lhasa. We offer this package, which includes a flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa and covers major cultural sites such as Potala Palace, Sera Monastery, Norbulingka Palace, and Jokhang Temple in Lhasa. The journey also includes visits to Gyantse, Shigatse, and finally the sacred pilgrimage site Kailash Mansarovar.
After visiting cultural sites in Lhasa City, this tour continues to Shigatse via the sacred Yamdrok Lake and Gyantse City. In Shigatse, you will visit the famous Tashilhunpo Monastery, a significant Tibetan Buddhist site. The journey then continues toward Kailash Mansarovar, passing through culturally rich Tibetan towns such as Lhatse, Saga, Purang, and many others, offering a deep insight into Tibetan traditions and landscapes.
At Lake Mansarovar, travelers participate in a morning puja (prayer ceremony) to seek blessings and good fortune. The following day, the journey continues with a drive to Darchen, the starting point of the Mount Kailash Circuit (Parikrama). During the Parikrama, you will cross the Dolma La Pass (5,630 m), the highest and most challenging point of the trek. Mount Kailash holds deep spiritual significance and is believed to possess a divine energy that attracts pilgrims from all over the world, making it one of the most sacred sites in Western Tibet.
After completing the Mount Kailash Circuit (Parikrama), the journey follows the same route back. You will drive from Darchen to Saga and then continue south toward the Nepal-Tibet border via Kerung. After crossing the border at Rasuwagadi, the trip concludes with a drive back to Kathmandu, marking the completion of the Mansarovar Yatra via Lhasa.
The Kailash Mansarovar journey typically begins with detailed planning and preparation, as it involves obtaining a Chinese visa, traveling through Tibet's high-altitude terrain, and trekking up to 5,600 meters during the Mount Kailash Parikrama (circumambulation).
Upon arriving at Kathmandu International Airport, you will be greeted and transferred to your hotel. During this time, your original passport will be collected for the Chinese visa process. The following day, you will visit sacred sites such as Pashupatinath, Swayambhunath, and Budhanilkantha with a tour guide in a private vehicle.
As part of the spiritual preparation, we will participate in Rudrabhishek (a special worship of Lord Shiva) with a Brahmin priest, praying for the success of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. After obtaining the necessary documents and checking your clothing and equipment, we will embark on our journey to Tibet.
The road trip begins with a drive from Kathmandu to Ghattekhola via Trisuli and Syabrubesi. After completing immigration formalities at the Chinese border, we will be allowed to cross into Tibet. Our first night in Tibet will be spent in Kerung, where we will also have an acclimatization day to adjust to the altitude.
The journey continues by road to Lake Mansarovar via Saga. Upon reaching the holy lake, we will bathe in its sacred waters and perform a special puja (prayer ritual) for peace and liberation. The next destination is Darchen, the starting point of the 3-day Parikrama (circumambulation) around Mount Kailash.
After completing the Parikrama, we will retrace our journey by road, returning to Kathmandu via Kerung. Back in Kathmandu, we will celebrate with a special farewell dinner with our Nepali staff to mark the successful completion of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. The next day, we will transfer you to the airport for your flight home.
All travelers between 18 and below 70 years of age with a valid passport (minimum 6 months validity)—including Indian citizens, Nepali citizens, and foreign nationals—can go the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. The journey includes long drives through remote highlands as the route lies in the high-altitude barren lands of Tibet, China and a challenging 3-day Parikrama (circumambulation) of Mount Kailash at altitudes exceeding 5,630 meters. Therefore, a good level of physical fitness, a positive mindset, and strong determination are essential, especially for participants with prior trekking or high-altitude experience. Due to the extreme elevation, those with heart conditions, respiratory issues, or other serious medical concerns must consult a doctor before attempting the yatra. Travelers should also be prepared to handle minor medical issues independently in remote areas with limited healthcare access. This pilgrimage is suitable for individuals who are physically fit and well-prepared.
It is especially recommended for:
However, the yatra is not recommended for:
To obtain a Chinese visa, Indian passport holders, regardless of their country of residence or geographical location, must submit their original passport to the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi through a tour company that has obtained the necessary Tibet entry permit and invitations for them. The Chinese Embassy in New Delhi takes a minimum of 4–5 working days to process and decide on such visa applications.
All other travelers holding a non-Indian passport (including NRIs with a non-Indian passport, OCI cardholders, and Green Card holders) must undergo biometric verification at the China Visa Center in Kathmandu before submitting their visa application. The original passport, visa application documents, and recent color photographs (in the prescribed size and format) must be provided to the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu. The Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu takes a minimum of 3–4 working days to process and decide on such visa applications.

Preparation is necessary when traveling from home to another country, especially for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra through Nepal into Tibet, China. The 16-day itinerary for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, from your arrival in Nepal to your departure, requires proper preparation to ensure safety, enhance your experience, and help you enjoy the journey to its fullest
The journey to Kailash Mansarovar is relatively challenging but highly rewarding due to the long journey from Nepal to Tibet. The process of obtaining a Chinese visa can be lengthy, and the drive involves traversing high-altitude terrain, with most of the route being above 4,000 meters. You may need to drive for 8 to 12 hours a day, including ascents and descents to cross the Dolma-La Pass, which is at an altitude of 5,630 meters above sea level.
Proper preparation for Kailash Mansarovar includes booking your trip with an experienced and reputable trekking agency that has completed many trips to Kailash, hiring an experienced guide and support staff for cooking, hiking to high elevations to reduce the risk of altitude sickness, managing your budget, packing the appropriate gear for cold weather, and building endurance and strength through activities such as walking, day hiking, running, biking, jogging, stretching, and swimming.
Another important aspect of preparation is to seek medical advice from a doctor before traveling, especially if you have respiratory concerns or other health issues such as food or drink allergies. Travel insurance is also essential for trek preparation; we recommend obtaining insurance that covers emergency evacuation during the Kailash Mansarovar tour, as the journey takes place in a remote area where emergency medical care is accessible but returning home may be difficult due to Chinese regulations. By following these guidelines, you can successfully complete the 16-day Kailash Mansarovar Yatra without any issues.
There are specific regulations for Indian passport holders regarding the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the China Indian Pilgrimage Service (CIPS) suspended the issuance of Kailash permits for Indian nationals due to political tensions between China and India. However, with recent improvements in India-China relations, as highlighted during the BRICS Summit, there are indications that the route is reopened from May 2025 through the Hilsa and Rasuwagadhi borders. Unfortunately, on 8th July 2025, a major flood at the Rasuwagadhi border destroyed the Friendship Bridge, leading to the complete closure of that route and shifting operations to the Kodari border.
To obtain a Tibet travel permit, we must send all visitors’ passports to a registered Tibet travel agent, who will process the permits and forward them to Delhi for visa approval. For visa processing, all travelers are required to complete a visa application form. Due to long queues, it usually takes a few extra days to receive the group travel visa in Kathmandu after processing in Delhi. As a result, pilgrims arriving in Kathmandu should expect possible delays before proceeding to the Kodari border.
To ensure smooth planning and secure your spot, please provide a copy of your passport along with your preferred travel dates in advance.
Welcome to Nepal! A member of the High Pass Adventure crew will be waiting for you outside the baggage claim area at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu to greet you upon arrival. He will transfer you to your hotel in, Kathmandu, by private vehicle. You will check into the hotel, take a nap, freshen up, and get ready for an appointment with our trekking office to discuss your program. Later in the evening, High Pass Adventure will treat you to a welcome dinner at an authentic Nepali restaurant. You will stay overnight at the hotel.
After breakfast, our city tour guide will guide you to Pashupatinath Temple, Gujeshowari, Sleeping Vishnu at Budhanilkantha, and Swayambhunath Stupa. At the same time, your passport will be submitted to the Chinese embassy for visa processing. After visiting these heritage sites, you will drive back to the hotel and have the rest of the day free to explore at your leisure.
It takes three days to process the Chinese visa due to the Chinese government's regulations. During this time, our Tibet tour crew will do the shopping and prepare everything needed. If you are missing any items for the puja or encounter any unforeseen needs, you can manage them during this period.
On this day, all members need to go to the Chinese embassy for fingerprinting to verify their identity and obtain the visa. In the late afternoon, the Chinese embassy will provide visas to all of us, and we will get ready to depart on our pilgrimage journey.
We will begin our journey in the morning with a drive to Tatopani Kodari. This settlement is located in Sindhupalchok District, in the northeastern region of Kathmandu. The drive takes around 7–8 hours along the scenic Araniko Highway, passing through lush hills, river valleys, and traditional villages along the way. Upon reaching Tatopani Kodari, you can enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the border town before settling in for the night at a local guesthouse.
Following breakfast, we will set out for the Kodari–Khasa border, also known as the Friendship Bridge, which connects Nepal and Tibet. After completing the necessary immigration formalities, which may take around one and a half hours depending on the process, we will cross into Tibet. From there, we continue our journey to Zhangmu (Zangbu) and then onward to Nyalam, the first major village in Tibet. Surrounded by stunning mountain landscapes, Nyalam offers a perfect place to relax and acclimatize. We will spend the night at a local guesthouse.
The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra takes you through the high-altitude terrains of the Tibetan Plateau, where proper acclimatization is very important for a safe journey. Since Nyalam itself lies at an elevation of around 3,700 meters, we spend two nights here to allow our bodies to adjust gradually to the altitude. This helps reduce the risk of altitude sickness before moving on to higher elevations. During the full day in Nyalam, we will have leisure time to explore the small town, experience the local culture, and enjoy the surrounding Himalayan scenery. To aid acclimatization, we will also take a short hike to a higher elevation above Nyalam, which will help prepare us physically and mentally for the days ahead on this sacred journey.
The route takes us smoothly towards the settlement of Saga, crossing over the high mountain passes of Nyalam, Thong La, and La Lung with a gradual pattern of ascents and descents. Along the journey, we are rewarded with breathtaking views of the Tibetan landscape, including the serene and picturesque Lake Peiku Tso, which shines brilliantly against the backdrop of snowcapped peaks.
Travelers will also get a glimpse of the traditional lifestyle of local Tibetans, as we pass through wide grasslands where yaks and sheep graze peacefully under the care of nomadic herders. The drive itself is both scenic and culturally enriching, offering an introduction to the vast beauty of Tibet before reaching Saga. Upon arrival, we will check into a hotel for an overnight stay, allowing us to rest and prepare for the next stage of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.
Today will be the longest driving day as we reach Lake Manasarovar. Wake up early for breakfast and start the journey full of excitement. Jeeps and trucks will roll through wide valleys, following rivers and grazing lands of yaks and sheep. The sacred Manasarovar Lake is approximately 510 kilometers away, and the drive will take about 10 hours. Far to the north and south, you can see snow-covered peaks, and in the late afternoon, you will have your first sight of the Holy Kailash Parbat and Lake Manasarovar. Upon arrival, the majestic Manasarovar Holy Lake and the imposing Mt. Kailash will unfold before you. Spend the night in Manasarovar. Holy Kailash Parbat, Mt. Gurula-Mandata, and Lake Rashekshi are situated in the surrounding area.
Today, you will bathe in Lake Manasarovar and perform Puja. After completing the memorable morning bath and Puja, we will head towards Tarchen. In the late afternoon, you can stroll around the small market of Darchen town. It is considered the base camp for the Holy Kailash Parikrama. Get ready for the three-day Kailash parikrama.
Important Note: Group members who wish to modify their schedule and opt out of the trek can visit Yam Dwar and return to their hotel in Darchen instead of continuing the Kailash Parikrama. However, they must decide the night before the trek begins so that the guide can arrange their additional hotel stay in Darchen accordingly.
Today marks the start of the Kailash Parikrama (Kora). After breakfast, begin the journey by driving for an hour from Darchen to Yamadwar, covering 5 km, and then start the 15 km spiritual trek for the Kora from Yamadwar to Dirapuk. It will be an exciting day, walking along beautiful rocky cliffs and waterfalls, with some clouds in the clear blue sky making you feel the great god Shiva is everywhere with tons of blessings for you. Upon reaching Dirapuk, you'll be treated to an awe-inspiring close-up view of the north face of Mount Kailash. Spend the night in Dirapuk, enjoying the impressive vistas of Mt. Kailash and the surrounding landscapes.
Hike to Charan Sparsh from Dirapuk: Charan Sparsh (5,475m) is a 3 km one-way trek from Dirapuk, making it a 6 km round trip. It takes approximately 5-6 hours for the round trip due to the high altitude. Consult with your tour guide about this trek, as they will lead you on this short journey to touch the feet of Mt. Kailash, which is considered to be Lord Shiva Himself. This trek is not included in the package due to the challenging walking path and the need for favorable weather conditions. Additionally, it requires trekkers to be physically fit.
Today will be the hardest but holiest day of your pilgrimage Yatra, as you trek from Derapuk to Zuthulpuk via the Dolma-La pass. Start early in the morning for the challenging ascent to Dolma-La, where the reduced oxygen levels add to the difficulty. Pilgrims often leave old clothes, a lock of hair, or a drop of blood as symbolic offerings, hoping that Yamraja (the master of death) will notice these signs and allow them to be reborn in spirit as they pass Dolma-La. Upon reaching the pass, the atmosphere will be cold and windy, but the view is breathtaking, adorned with colorful prayer flags and massive stones representing the Goddess Dolma. Tourists and pilgrims celebrate their success by hanging Tibetan flags.
Once you reach the top, make the holiest offerings and sit down for meditation. Then, begin your descent, passing Parvati-sthal and Gauri Kunda along the way. By late afternoon, you will arrive at Zuthulpuk (the cave of miracles, where the great ascetic Milarepa is said to have performed miracles).
Important Note: If you do not feel fit to continue the trek from Dirapuk to Zuthulpuk via Dolma La Pass and wish to change your schedule to return to Darchen for an overnight stay, you must inform the guide in advance for necessary arrangements. All additional expenses for the change, including accommodation, transport and meals at Darchen, must be pay by the traveler.
Today, after breakfast, take a short walk (2 hours) to reach the endpoint of the trek and the starting point for the drive, where the coach will be waiting. We will then drive to Darchen, marking the successful completion of the Kora/Parikrama. You will reunite with other members who did not go for the Parikrama and were waiting. After arriving in Darchen, you will have lunch and then drive back to Saga. The return journey brings a different sense of fulfillment and joy after experiencing the wonders of the Mt. Kailash Mansarovar tour.
From Saga, our pilgrimage tour retraces the same route back to Nyalam. The ride along the smooth, paved Tibetan roads offers another chance to admire the breathtaking scenery. On the return journey, you will have the opportunity to enjoy and explore any sites you may have missed on the way up. Since Nyalam was also our first stop on the Tibet side, returning here brings a sense of familiarity and comfort. Today is a more relaxed day, giving us time to shop for souvenirs, wander around the area, or simply rest. We will spend the night at a guesthouse in Nyalam, preparing for the final leg of our journey.
Today marks the final day of the Kailash Mansarovar Tour. We will drive from Nyalam to the Zangmu border, where we will complete the immigration formalities at the Nepal–Tibet border and check out. After bidding farewell to our Tibetan guide and driver, we will continue the journey by Nepali tourist bus back to Kathmandu. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you will have time for souvenir shopping, and in the evening, High Pass Adventure will host a special farewell dinner to celebrate the completion of your spiritual journey.
Your Kailash Mansarovar Yatra concludes today. When it's time for your flight, a member of our High Pass Adventure team will transport you to Kathmandu International Airport approximately 3 hours before your scheduled departure. We hope you enjoyed this holy tour and look forward to welcoming you back for your next pilgrimage or adventure in the Himalayas. Visiting the Kailash Mansarovar tour is not only a physical and spiritual challenge but also an opportunity to connect with nature, culture, and a higher purpose. Whether you're seeking spiritual fulfillment, adventure, cultural exposure, or simply wishing to witness one of the world’s most sacred places, the Kailash Mansarovar journey offers an experience that will stay with you for a lifetime.
The best time to visit the Kailash Mansarovar is during late spring to the beginning of the autumn season, from May to September. These months provide the most favorable weather conditions for the journey, as it is located in Tibet, which is at a high altitude, with less rain during this period. Temperatures range from 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F), and the nights are cooler but not freezing. This means the altitude is still manageable, and the weather is not as harsh as in winter, making it a great time for trekking and circumambulating Kailash. Choosing the right time for your Kailash Mansarovar journey is crucial to ensure a safe and comfortable trip while enjoying the spiritual and natural beauty of the region.
The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is considered a challenging journey, both physically and mentally, due to its high-altitude trek, remote locations, and rugged terrain. However, it is a deeply spiritual pilgrimage for many, and with proper preparation, most people can complete the journey with a rest day for acclimatization. It is highly recommended to engage in regular walking, hiking, and aerobic exercises to prepare for the trek. It’s also important to train your legs and lungs to handle high-altitude walks, ensuring you can successfully complete the journey without any hardship.
To successfully complete the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, travelers need physical training with endurance exercises, such as hiking, walking, and cardiovascular activities. Altitude training is also important—if possible, spend time at higher altitudes to acclimatize your body to lower oxygen levels. Mental preparation is key as well—be ready for the spiritual and physical challenges of the trek, and cultivate the mental strength required to complete the journey. Additionally, pack properly to ensure you have the right gear for extreme weather conditions, including warm clothing, trekking boots, and other essentials.
There are three main routes for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Kathmandu, Nepal, each offering a unique experience due to different locations, time frames, and costs. The most popular route is via Rasuwagadi-Kerung, which is the most commonly used for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Nepal. The journey begins in Kathmandu, where you travel by road to Rasuwagadi (Nepal), which serves as an entry point to Tibet. From there, you continue the journey through Kerung and Saga before reaching Lake Mansarovar and Mount Kailash.
Another route is from Hilsa (Nepal) via the Taklakot border of Tibet. This route is longer on the Nepal side because you must take a flight to Nepalgunj and Simikot, then walk for 4-5 days to the border, which can be challenging due to its remote location. However, after crossing the border, it's only 100 km to Mansarovar.
The third route is from Lhasa, where you take a flight from Kathmandu and then travel to Kailash Mansarovar. This option is more luxurious and expensive but offers a wonderful journey to Kailash Mansarovar.
The Rasuwagadi (Rasuwa) to Kerung route is considered one of the best and most scenic routes for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Nepal, due to its tranquil, scenic journey, cultural immersion, good accessibility, and lower cost. This route offers a more peaceful and beautiful experience, while still providing the spiritual rewards of reaching the holy Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar.
The cost of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra can vary based on factors such as the route, duration, travel agency, group size, and the inclusions in the tour package. Generally, the cost ranges from USD 2,500 to USD 5,000 or more. Inclusions in the cost typically cover local transportation in Kathmandu, bus transport from Kathmandu to Kailash and back, guides and support team, accommodation (twin-sharing in hotels and simple guesthouses), all meals (usually vegetarian), and all necessary travel permits, including the Tibet Travel Permit, Kailash Yatra Permit, and China Group Visa.
Along with the total cost for the full board package, there are some additional costs to consider, such as travel insurance, which should cover the 17-day Kailash Mansarovar tour, your international flight (to and from Nepal), personal expenses for shopping, tips for guides, staff, and drivers, as well as additional meals. Optional services, such as hiring horses, yaks, or porters to carry your luggage during the Kailash Kora (Parikarma), can also add to the total cost.
The road distance from Kathmandu to Timure (Rasuwa Gadi) is approximately 145 km (90 miles) via the Pasang Lhamu Highway, passing through Galchhi → Trishuli Bazaar → Dhunche → Syabrubesi → Timure (Rasuwa Gadi border). Specifically, the road distance from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi is 122 km, and from Syabrubesi to Timure is 24 km. The road is mostly blacktopped up to Kalikasthan (80 km), but some sections after Kalikasthan to Timure are rough and can be affected by landslides, particularly during the monsoon season.
The total road distance for the Kailash Yatra from Kathmandu to Darchen (via Rasuwa Gadi, Kerung, Saga, and Mansarovar) and the trekking distance from Darchen to Darchen via Dormala is approximately 940 km. This means the total round trip, including both driving and trekking, is about 1880 km.
Detailed Road Distance:
The Kailash Parikrama (the holy trek around Mount Kailash) is 53 kilometers in total, which typically takes 3 days to complete.
Day 1: Darchen to Dirapuk (20 km)
Day 2: Dirapuk to Zutulphuk (22 km)
Day 3: Zutulphuk to Darchen (11 km)
Yes, a normal person can go to Kailash Mansarovar, but it is essential to hold a valid passport with at least six months of validity. Physical fitness, mental preparedness, and proper acclimatization are crucial due to the high altitude and remote terrain. It’s a profound spiritual and personal journey — challenging, yet deeply rewarding.
Traveling to Kailash Mansarovar from Nepal is one of the most scenic and spiritually fulfilling routes. It is often preferred over the India–China routes due to easier accessibility and more flexible itineraries. The journey typically starts in Kathmandu, followed by an approximately 8-hour drive to the Rasuwagadhi border. After crossing into Tibet, travelers follow the Tibet-China highway through Kerung, Saga, Drongpa, and Darchen, eventually reaching Lake Mansarovar and Mount Kailash. However, a Tibet Group Visa is required, and individual travel is not permitted. You must book the trip through a registered Nepal-based travel agency.
Anyone in good physical and mental health with valid travel documents is eligible to undertake the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. However, due to the high altitude and remote terrain, we highly recommend this journey for individuals between the ages of 18 and 70, as they are more likely to complete it successfully without major issues.
From October to April is not a recommended time to visit the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra because the winter months are harsh and extremely cold, with temperatures often dropping well below freezing. Snow and ice make the terrain challenging, and many parts of the route become inaccessible due to heavy snow. Therefore, winter is generally not recommended for the Kailash Mansarovar journey.
Choosing the right time for your Kailash Mansarovar journey is crucial to ensure a safe and comfortable trip while enjoying the spiritual and natural beauty of the region.
The optimal months to plan a trip to Kailash Mansarovar are from May to September. During this period, the region experiences milder temperatures and reduced rainfall, creating favorable conditions for travel. Daytime temperatures typically range from 15°C to 25°C, while nighttime temperatures can drop to around 5°C to 10°C. However, due to the high-altitude terrain, weather can be unpredictable, and temperatures can occasionally fall below freezing at night. Additionally, the region offers clear skies and fresh air, enhancing the overall experience. Therefore, this timeframe is recommended for travelers planning to visit Kailash Mansarovar Lake.
Food and accommodations during the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra are simple but satisfying. Meals are delicious and prepared by experienced Nepali cooks, with most dishes being vegetarian. The staples include rice, lentils (dal), vegetables, chapatis (flatbread), and some Western-style dishes, with meals occasionally prepared based on visitors' preferences. While the food may not be fancy, it is nourishing and sufficient to keep you energized throughout the journey. Accommodations are comfortable, consisting of hotels and guesthouses along the route.
Food options during the trek will be sufficient, but due to the high elevation, you may experience a reduced appetite. Bringing your own snacks, such as energy bars, dried fruits, and quick-packed foods, is highly recommended for an energy boost. For lunch during the tour, meals will be packed in a hot pot and eaten on the way between Kerung and Darchen. Along the trek route, small teahouses and tented eateries are available, offering quick meals like instant noodles, packet soups, hot water, tea, and coffee. These stops are conveniently located at key points, such as between Qugu Temple and Derapuk or between Derapuk and Juthulpuk Monasteries.
Accommodation during the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra varies depending on the location. In places like Derapuk and Zudulpuk, basic guesthouses are available, while slightly more comfortable hotels can be found in Kerung, Saga, and Darchen. Darchen, the base for the Kailash trek, offers the most comfortable accommodations along the journey. Kerung and Saga also have 3-4 star hotels with private bathrooms and electric blankets for chilly nights. Rooms are available in standard, double, and suite options. During the trek, the first and second nights are typically spent in guesthouses near Derapuk and Zudulpuk Monasteries. These accommodations consist of dormitory-style rooms shared by three to four people. Warm blankets are provided, but there is no air-conditioning or private bathrooms, and showers are unavailable.
Transportation for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is an essential part of the journey, as the sacred site lies in a remote region of Tibet. Our offer includes overland routes via bus or jeep from Kathmandu to the Tibet border, and on the Tibet side, transportation is arranged with private or group vehicles depending on the group size. Options range from luxury tours with private vehicles to more economical group travel. Properly planned transportation ensures safety, comfort, and a smoother spiritual journey.
The total cost for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Package from Nepal is INR 2, 10,000 (two lakh ten thousand Indian rupees) per person for Indian passport holders, USD 2,560 per person for foreign nationals, and NPR 1, 60,000 per person for Nepali nationals. This cost is based on a minimum group size of 10 participants. If there are 20 people in a group, the group leader will receive a complimentary package for the entire trip.
Please note, the total cost may vary depending on nationality, group size, and the level of services selected—such as transportation, accommodation, meals, and field staff arrangements.
In addition to the package cost, there may be extra personal expenses, including donations, horse or porter hire during the Kailash circuit (Kora), tips for the field staff, and shopping.
While all essential items are included in this tour package—such as permits, transportation, accommodation, and meals—there are several additional expenses travelers should be prepared for during the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. For full details, please read at the "Included and Excluded" sections of the cost information.
Upgraded Accommodation: Normally, the accommodations included in our package are basic during the Kailash Parikrama, while in other locations, standard 2-3 star hotels are provided in Nepal and Tibet. If you wish to upgrade to 4-5 star accommodations, please be prepared for additional charges.
Extra Food & Beverages: While all meals are included in the tour, lunch in Kathmandu, extra snacks, bottled water, and both hard and soft drinks, as well as bar bills, are not covered and will be an additional cost.
Hiring a local porter or horse for Kailash Kora: Hiring a local porter or horse for the Kailash Parikrama Kora will incur an additional cost. A porter will cost between Chinese Yuan 1300 to 1500 per person for a 2-night, 3-day trek. The porter will only carry your small day pack, weighing around 5 kg. The cost of hiring a horse ranges from Chinese Yuan 4500 to 5000 for the 2-night, 3-day trek. The horseman, who will also assist in carrying your small day pack (maximum 5 kg), is included in this cost.
If unable to complete the Kailash Kora: If you are unable to complete the Kailash Kora due to health issues, tiredness, or other reasons, you will need to return from either Derapuk to Darchen, or in some cases, if you are unable to continue walk after the Dolmala Pass, you will need to go back to Darchen. In this case, you will be responsible for the extra cost of an additional night at the Darchen Hotel and transportation. However, if you decide not to participate in the Kailash Kora and choose to stay in Darchen, this will be covered in our package.
Shopping, Tips & Donations: The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is a once-in-a-lifetime journey for travelers from all over the world. During the trip, many travelers purchase souvenirs and make donations while visiting temples and monasteries. Additionally, after completing the tour, it is customary to give tips to the working team, including guides, drivers, and staff. These additional expenses should be considered as they will increase your total budget.
The Kailash Mansarovar Tour is costly due to several factors, including permits, logistics, its remote location, and limited accessibility. Since it is located in Tibet, China, special permits and a group visa are required, adding extra costs. Additionally, an extra permit is needed to enter Ngari Prefecture in Tibet. Obtaining these permits involves government authorities and can be expensive.
The journey covers over 1,000 km of remote terrain, requiring private vehicles for transportation. Accommodations in places like Kerung, Saga, Mansarovar, and Darchen are expensive due to high demand and limited availability. Food and drinking water must be transported from far distances, making them more costly than in other parts of Tibet and Nepal.
Porters, yaks, or ponies are required to carry luggage at high altitudes, and guides and support staff are mandatory for safety and navigation. Emergency medical support, including oxygen cylinders and evacuation services, is often included in the package.
Independent travel is not allowed—travelers must book through an authorized travel agency with a Tibetan guide, further increasing costs. Strict regulations and limited permits also contribute to the high price of the tour.
Our mission is to help every pilgrim successfully complete the Kailash Kora and we hope all can achieve this goal. However, if a pilgrim is unable to complete the Kora from Darchen due to health issues, altitude sickness, or other challenges, it is common at high elevations for some people. In such cases, the pilgrim can stay in Darchen until the rest of the group returns after completing the Kora. During their stay, there are several ways to have a meaningful spiritual experience. Pilgrims can explore Darchen on foot, participate in local prayers, or receive support for meals and guidance around the area, allowing them to connect spiritually with Mount Kailash even without completing the full Kora.
Regarding the cost of staying in Darchen, pilgrims need to pay extra for accommodation, as Darchen offers more comfortable and luxury options compared to the basic lodges available during the Kailash Kora, such as at Derapuk and Zuthulpuk.

Kailash Mansarovar - A Divine Journey
11th June, 2025
We, a family of four along with some friends, chose High Pass Adventure for our Kailash Mansarovar Trip. We began discussions with Mr. Purna Karki at the start of the year, and he was always prompt and helpful, answering all our queries very quickly. The accommodation provided in Kathmandu was comfortable, and the transportation to Rasuwagadhi and back was perfect—even though the road conditions were poor.
Once we crossed into Tibet after Rasuwagadhi, the team led by Mr. Ganesh, cook Ramesh, and Chinese guide Tashi took complete care of us, providing delicious food and personalized attention at every step of the journey. Without the guidance and support of this hardworking team, it would have been difficult for us to complete the challenging 3-day parikrama and the entire journey.
Overall, it was a very well-organized trip by High Pass Adventure. Highly recommended to all!
