This full package cost includes accommodation, transportation, meals, half-suspension mountain bikes, required biking route permits, and the services of experienced guides and porters, as outlined in the itinerary. All inclusions and exclusions are clearly detailed in the “Cost Includes” and “Cost Excludes” sections to ensure complete transparency.
Please note that the total cost per person may vary depending on several factors, such as the level of services selected, trip duration, group size, type of accommodation, season, and any additional activities. If you prefer upgraded or luxury accommodation along the route, extra charges will apply.
The USD 1,850 is a net group price per person. However, additional personal expenses may apply, including charging electronic devices, Wi-Fi usage, staff tips, donations, bar bills, extra food or drinks outside the itinerary, emergency rescue costs, or expenses incurred if a participant is unable to complete the trip and must return independently. All such additional costs must be covered by the client.
The Upper Mustang Mountain Biking trip is suitable for riders who have prior biking experience, good physical fitness, and strong mental preparation. The route includes a mix of off-road trails and blacktop roads, with several demanding sections featuring steep ascents and descents, narrow trails, strong winds, and high-altitude terrain.
Riders should have experience with off-road biking, technical descents, and steep climbs. Excellent cardiovascular fitness and stamina are essential, as the trip involves long daily rides of 5–8 hours across varied and challenging landscapes. Since the route reaches elevations above 4,000 meters, participants should also be aware of altitude sickness and ideally have prior experience trekking or biking at high altitudes.
Although it is possible to complete the trip solo, joining a group or hiring a professional cycling guide and support team (guide/porter) is highly recommended for safety, logistics, and a smoother overall experience. To successfully complete the Upper Mustang Mountain Biking trip, riders should maintain the right mindset, carry proper gear, and consult experienced local guides who are familiar with the terrain.
High Pass Adventure warmly welcomes you to Nepal at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA). A member of our team will be waiting for you outside the baggage hall, holding an A4-sized paper with your name and our company name.
This representative will escort you from the airport to your hotel in Kathmandu via a private vehicle. Upon arrival at the hotel, you can check in, rest, and freshen up before attending a meeting at our trekking office to discuss the details of your Upper Mustang Mountain Biking program.
After breakfast at the hotel, we will depart from Kathmandu around 7:30 a.m. Our guide will arrive at the hotel on time and accompany you throughout the journey to Pokhara by private vehicle.
The drive follows the Prithvi Highway, offering beautiful views of river valleys, small towns, traditional Nepali villages, terraced fields, and lush mountain landscapes. Along the way, we will stop for toilet breaks and lunch.
Upon arrival in Pokhara, you will check in to the hotel, take some rest, and later visit the Lakeside area for a wonderful dinner, preparing for the next day’s drive to Kagbeni by private vehicle.
We will have breakfast at the Pokhara hotel at 6:30 a.m. and depart at 7:30 a.m. for Kagbeni, as the road journey is long and traffic delays may occur in some sections due to road conditions. The total driving distance is approximately 193 km, and along the way we will stop for toilet breaks, lunch, and photography.
The drive follows the Beni–Baglung Highway up to Beni (about 83 km) and then continues along the Kali Gandaki Valley for another 110 km, passing through beautiful local villages, forests, and farmlands. You will also enjoy stunning mountain views of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, and the surrounding landscape.
Upon arrival in Kagbeni, you and the guide will assemble (set up) the bikes in preparation for the first ride to the next destination. Afterward, enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery and explore Kagbeni village, including its temples and monasteries.
Kagbeni is the checkpoint for Upper Mustang permits, so after breakfast at around 8:00 a.m., we will depart for Samar. The road conditions are a mix of off-road sections and blacktop. The route involves gentle ups and downs until Chuksang, followed by a gradual ascent toward Samar.
Along the journey, we will stop at Chuksang for lunch. The landscape is barren and can be windy, so it is important to wear proper mountain biking gear to protect your body. From Chuksang, the road climbs slightly and crosses the river to reach Chele on the opposite riverbank, where the river flows through a rock tunnel. After this, the trail continues with a steady uphill ride to Samar.
Throughout the ride, you will be rewarded with stunning views and dramatic landscapes of the surrounding region.
After breakfast at the teahouse in Samar, we will depart for Ghami. The biking route will be more challenging than on previous days, as you will cross several high passes, including Bhena La, Yamdo La, Syanboch La, Nya La, and Ghami La. This means there will be frequent ascents and descents across high-altitude terrain.
We will stop at Tamagaun for lunch along the way. Throughout the ride, you will enjoy spectacular scenery, with impressive mountain views and dramatic landscapes. Ghami is one of the most beautiful villages in Upper Mustang, located beside the river and surrounded by fertile land. The village is also home to an ancient monastery and a local hospital supported by aid from Japan.
Today, we will follow the same routine before starting the journey from Ghami Village. The biking route includes both ascents and descents, passing through Charang Village before reaching Lo Manthang.
Charang is a charming village, home to a beautiful 400-year-old Gelugpa sect monastery filled with friendly monks. It is a great place to relax, take photos, and enjoy lunch. Along the route, you will see stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
After arriving in Lo Manthang, you will check in to the teahouse and then walk to the town center to explore the ancient walled city. Lo Manthang is a colorful historic village rich in culture and history, offering spectacular views. You will also have the opportunity to visit the old King’s Palace
Today is an exploration day around Lo Manthang and Choser Cave. After breakfast, you will hike to Choser Cave, which takes approximately 4–6 hours round trip. Along the way, you will enjoy wonderful views of the surrounding landscape.
Upon reaching Choser Cave, you will explore this ancient cave complex, which was carved by people during the Khampa war period. After visiting the cave, you will return to Lo Manthang.
Lo Manthang is famous for its centuries-old monasteries (gumbas), the Royal Palace, local culture, museums, and traditional Buddhist way of life. You will also have the opportunity to reach the China border area and view the Tibetan landscape from near Choser Cave.
Choser Cave is a picturesque site rich in history, and if the weather is clear, you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Annapurna range and other snow-capped Himalayan peaks.
Today, we will follow the same routine before starting the journey from Yara Village. The biking route includes both ascents and descents, passing through Dhi Village and crossing the Kali Gandaki River along the way.
After leaving Lo Manthang, we will ride back for approximately one hour and then turn left toward Yara Village via single-track trails. The route gently ascends for about an hour before a steep descent to Dhi Village. Near Dhi Village, we will cross the Kali Gandaki River and then gradually ascend to reach Yara Village.
If time permits, you may visit Ghar Gompa from Yara Village, which takes about one hour. Ghar Gompa is an ancient monastery with a fascinating history in the Upper Mustang region.
This day will be another rewarding experience, offering stunning mountain views, dramatic landscapes, and an exciting single-track riding adventure.
This day is relatively short due to the road conditions and high altitude. After breakfast in Yara, we will begin the ride toward Tangbe, which takes approximately 4–5 hours. The route descends from Yara, becomes relatively flat near the riverside, and then includes a series of ascents and descents before reaching Tangbe.
Along the way, you will enjoy an exciting off-road biking experience with stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
Today is one of the toughest mountains biking days in the entire region because there is no proper road, so you will ride mainly on narrow walking trail. The route begins with a steep ascent up a high hill, follows the ridgeline, and then descends steeply to reach Chuksang. In some sections, you will need to carry your bike.
This day offers a unique combination of mountain biking and trekking on scenic single-track trails. Along the route, you will enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and landscapes. There are no teahouses between Tangbe and Chuksang, so all riders must carry enough drinking water and a packed lunch after the breakfast. Meals will be available upon arrival in Chuksang.
After breakfast at Chuksang, we will start riding toward Marpha, following the same route to Kagbeni that we rode on the first day of the Upper Mustang Biking Trip. From Kagbeni, we will continue cycling through Jomsom to reach Marpha.
This day offers an easier ride due to the gentle ups and downs and mostly flat, blacktop road conditions. Along the route, strong winds are common because the trail follows the Kali Gandaki River. Since you will be riding south while the wind blows from the north, it is important to be prepared with proper biking gear to protect your body.
You will once again be rewarded with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and landscapes. Marpha is a charming village, famous for its traditional houses and apple orchards. After arriving in Marpha, you will have time to explore and enjoy the natural and cultural beauty of the village.
After breakfast at the teahouse, we will ride from Marpha toward Tatopani. Today’s ride is mostly an easy downhill journey through several local villages such as Tukuche, Kobang, Lete, and Ghasa along the Kali Gandaki Valley. Along the way, we will pass farmlands, forests, and beautiful waterfalls on our route to Tatopani.
This will be a longer ride, offering a change in topographical scenery compared to the previous days. After reaching Tatopani, you can relax and soothe your tired muscles by enjoying a natural hot spring bath, as there is a natural hot pool located near the village on the bank of the Kali Gandaki River.
Today is the final day of the Upper Mustang Mountain Biking tour. After breakfast at the teahouse, we will begin our ride toward Beni. The ride is relatively easy, following a flat, blacktop road at lower elevations through green farmlands along the Kali Gandaki Valley.
Beni marks the end point of your biking adventure. From Beni, you will transfer by vehicle to Pokhara for an overnight stay.
Upon arrival in Pokhara, you will have time to explore the city and visit Phewa Lake if time permits. In the evening, you can celebrate the successful completion of your mountain biking journey with your guide and porter by enjoying a delightful Western-style dinner at a lakeside restaurant.
After breakfast at the Pokhara hotel, we will depart early in the morning around 8:30 AM by private vehicle. The road is a highway, paved in some areas and unpaved in others. The journey takes you along river valleys, through a few towns, terraced fields, and green hilly scenery, making for a wonderful journey after the challenging high-altitude mountain biking. Along the way, we will stop for restroom breaks and lunch.
Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you can rest at the hotel after the long drive. In the evening, you will be invited to a farewell dinner at a Nepali cultural restaurant, where you can enjoy traditional music and dance performances.
Today marks the last day of your trip to Nepal. One of our High Pass Adventure staff members will accompany you to Kathmandu International Airport for your flight departure.
If you wish to plan an additional trip to Nepal or return for another adventure, we are always here to assist you with your next journey and adventure activities.

There are many benefits to choosing Upper Mustang for mountain biking. The route is renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty and rich Buddhist cultural experiences. Along the way, you can observe ancient natural and man-made caves, centuries-old monasteries, and traditional Mustang villages.
The region offers excellent biking routes, with a mix of blacktop roads and off-road sections, making it ideal for adventure mountain biking. Upper Mustang lies in the rain-shadow zone, so it is suitable for biking almost any time of the year. The flexible road access allows the trip to be easily customized according to your time, fitness level, and preferences.
The trail features moderate to challenging terrain and includes thrilling high-pass crossings, making Upper Mustang an unforgettable mountain biking adventure in Nepal.
The best time for Upper Mustang mountain biking is from mid-spring to mid-autumn, mainly from April to October. During these months, the weather is generally sunny and warm, offering excellent mountain views, clean air, and minimal chances of rain or snow. That makes good for mountain Biking in the Upper Mustang Region. This is because the Upper Mustang region lies in the rain-shadow area of the Himalayas.
In contrast, winter (January and February) is not recommended for mountain biking, as extremely cold temperatures and strong winds make riding difficult and uncomfortable.
Booking the Upper Mustang Mountain Biking tour with High Pass Adventure offers many advantages. We provide customized itineraries tailored to each rider’s preferences, fitness level, and timeframe, along with reasonable and transparent pricing with no hidden costs. Our itineraries are flexible, allowing adjustments along the route to ensure the best possible experience.

In our standard Upper Mustang Mountain biking itinerary, the trip starts in Kagbeni and ends in Beni. The complete itinerary is 15 days, including your arrival in and departure from Kathmandu.
Out of these 14 days, the actual mountain biking duration is 10 days, covering the route from Kagbeni to Beni after exploring the Upper Mustang region.
Upper Mustang mountain biking is considered moderate to challenging due to long riding distances, rough road conditions, varied landscapes, strong winds, and high-altitude terrain. The trip requires good physical and mental fitness, along with strong determination.
Riders typically cover 20 to 45 kilometers per day, often on rocky and off-road sections at high elevations. Therefore, prior training is essential. It is highly recommended to practice 2–3 hours of daily cycling, preferably with a backpack, on narrow trails that include both ascents and descents before attempting the Upper Mustang Mountain Biking adventure.
We do not recommend Upper Mustang Mountain biking for beginners, even with an experienced biking guide. The route involves high-altitude terrain, long daily distances, mixed road conditions (blacktop and off-road), and a windy, dusty, and cold environment. This demanding region requires strong mountain biking skills, good physical endurance, and prior experience with off-road and high-altitude cycling.
However, if beginners are highly determined to attempt the trip, hiring an experienced mountain biking guide is essential, and proper preparation is a must. We strongly recommend training 2–3 hours daily, focusing on narrow trails with ascents and descents, before embarking on the Upper Mustang Mountain Biking adventure.
The total cost of the Upper Mustang Mountain Biking trip is USD 1,850 per person for a group (minimum of two participants), based on our 15-day itinerary from arrival to departure in Kathmandu. This cost includes accommodation, transportation, meals, required permits, guide and porter services, a half-suspension mountain bike, helmet, and basic repair tools, as outlined in the itinerary.
Please note that the total cost per person may vary depending on factors such as the services selected, trip duration, group size, type of accommodation, guide or porter requirements, bike selection, and any additional activities or luxury facilities requested.
Yes, you need two types of permits for the Upper Mustang Mountain Biking Trip: the Upper Mustang Special Permit and the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) Entry Permit. These permits must be presented at various checkpoints along the biking route. Without these permits, you are not allowed to enter the Upper Mustang region, and paying extra fees later won’t help, as these permits must be issued in Kathmandu through a registered trekking agency like High Pass Adventure.
Permit Details:
These permits are mandatory to ensure safety, environmental protection, and proper record-keeping of visitors in the region.
Yes, you can trust High Pass Adventure without a doubt. Our field staff—mountain biking guides and porters—are highly professional and experienced. They have many years of trekking experience and come from the Himalayan region, giving them extensive knowledge of biking routes, local culture, first aid, and basic bicycle mechanics for on-the-spot repairs. They can also explain the natural surroundings along the way. Additionally, they speak excellent English, ensuring they clearly communicate important information and enhance your overall biking experience.
Yes, electricity and Wi-Fi facilities are available along the Upper Mustang biking route for an additional charge. However, at higher-altitude and more remote locations, the Wi-Fi signal is weak, and electricity may be limited for charging devices. Sometimes, power can be cut off due to weather conditions, making it difficult to access both electricity and Wi-Fi. Therefore, it is highly recommended to bring a small solar panel or a power bank to charge your electronic devices and purchase a Nepali SIM card (Ncell or Nepal Telecom) for 4G data. Please note that Wi-Fi and mobile network coverage are limited and often unreliable in these remote areas due to the challenging geography.
There is sufficient accommodation available along the Upper Mustang Mountain Biking Route at every stop, as the route is less crowded compared to the Annapurna Circuit or Everest Base Camp routes. Accommodation is provided by teahouses and lodges, which typically offer twin-sharing rooms with simple bedding and shared bathrooms. Some teahouses also provide more comfortable or luxurious options. Meals are served in the teahouses and include local dishes such as dal bhat, chapati, momo, noodles, and thukpa, along with a few Western options like pasta and pizza.
Yes, we can customize the Upper Mustang mountain biking itinerary based on trekkers’ needs, including their interests, schedule, and budget, as the route is accessible by road. However, the current itinerary has been carefully crafted using our years of expertise and field experience from previous biking tours to provide the best possible adventure. Depending on your available time and preferences, the journey can be extended or shortened without compromising the thrill or scenic beauty of the experience.
A full-suspension mountain bike (dual suspension) is the best and most suitable option for the Upper Mustang. A hardtail (half-suspension) mountain bike can also work, as the biking route features rugged terrain, steep climbs, and long descents on proper roads and trekking trails.
Using a full-suspension bike provides greater comfort and control on rough trails, as it absorbs shocks from rocks, gravel, technical sections, and downhill terrain, making it better than a half-suspension bike for this trip.
Yes, if you have your own bike, bringing it is highly recommended, as you will be familiar with it and know the condition of its parts. If you choose not to bring your own bike, you can rent one in Kathmandu; however, rentals may be less reliable and more expensive. In our package, a half-suspension mountain bike is included.
Our package does not include a backup support vehicle, but you will be assisted by a porter during the Upper Mustang mountain biking tour. If there are more than 4 riders, we provide a support vehicle for the entire route, as flat tires or mechanical issues can occur at any time. Without immediate repair support, it may be difficult to reach the camp on time or stay with your group.
Yes, travel insurance is necessary for the Upper Mustang mountain biking trip in the Nepal Himalayas. Mountain biking is an adventure sport, and this route passes through remote areas with rugged terrain at high altitude. In case of an emergency, quick rescue can be difficult and expensive, and if a helicopter evacuation is required, the cost can be very high. Therefore, having travel insurance that covers emergency evacuation and medical treatment is essential for your safety and peace of mind.
Yes, tipping is expected because guides and porters appreciate it for their service. They are an essential part of successfully completing your journey, and tipping is a way to acknowledge their hard work and dedication. They accept any major currency, including Euros, USD, or Nepali Rupees. The recommended tipping rate is 10–15% of the total payable amount, which can be distributed together among the team.
The best time for the Upper Mustang Mountain Biking Tour is from mid-spring to mid-autumn, roughly April to October. During these months, the Upper Mustang region offers ideal weather conditions—sunny and warm, not too hot or too cold, with minimal rain or snow. Compared to other months, this region lies in the rain shadow, which ensures stable weather and clear visibility. This makes it perfect for outdoor activities like mountain biking and trekking.
The months from November to March are not recommended, as temperatures can be extremely cold and windy, and some areas may be blocked due to heavy snowfall or icy trails.
Therefore, you should choose a time that best fits your vacation schedule. Regardless of the season, we highly advise all bikers to come well-equipped and properly geared for the journey. The Upper Mustang Mountain Biking Tour offers cultural history, stunning scenery, and diverse landscapes in every season.
The difficulty level of the Upper Mustang Mountain Biking Tour is moderate to challenging, yet it is a highly rewarding adventure. It requires a good level of physical fitness, mountain biking experience, mental flexibility, and determination. The route covers a wide range of terrain—from smooth dirt roads and single tracks to rocky, steep, and high-altitude sections, with some paved roads (blacktop).
Riders should be fit enough to bike 5 to 7 hours a day over the course of the 9-day itinerary. The most demanding parts of the ride are crossing passes above 4,000 meters and the section between Tangbe and Chuksang, which requires proper acclimatization due to the thin air and lower oxygen levels. Cyclists must be prepared to push or carry their bikes in certain sections, especially between Tangbe and Chuksang, where the ascent and descent are too steep and rugged to ride. One of the most fulfilling moments of the trip is the sense of accomplishment from completing this section, making it an unforgettable achievement.
Despite the challenges, the Upper Mustang Mountain Biking Tour offers incredible rewards—from awe-inspiring mountain views and cultural encounters with local communities to diverse landscapes that transition from lush green valleys to high-altitude alpine deserts. While the ride is not suitable for complete beginners, it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for confident riders with prior off-road or high-altitude biking experience.
Proper preparation is essential, including physical training, altitude awareness, having an experienced guide, and carrying the right gear. With the right mindset and preparation, this adventure can be completed safely and enjoyably.
Altitude sickness, also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), is a common concern during the Upper Mustang Mountain Biking Tour due to the high elevations and rugged terrain, especially when crossing passes above 4,000 meters. Symptoms may include headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, and shortness of breath, and can affect even the most physically fit riders. The rapid gain in elevation without proper acclimatization is the primary cause. Since the route ascends from lowland areas to high-altitude terrain over a short period, cyclists must pay close attention to their bodies and take altitude sickness seriously.
To prevent altitude sickness during the ride, gradual acclimatization is essential. Our itinerary is flexible, including rest and acclimatization days, especially before attempting high passes. Riders should stay well-hydrated, avoid alcohol and smoking, eat nutritious food, and maintain a steady pace without overexertion. If symptoms occur, it is important to rest, descend if necessary, and seek medical attention if conditions worsen.
Taking preventive medications, such as acetazolamide (Diamox), after consulting a doctor can also help. Most importantly, riding with an experienced guide familiar with high-altitude conditions enhances safety and ensures proper response to any altitude-related issues.
For the Upper Mustang Mountain Biking Tour, two permits are required: the Upper Mustang Special Permit and the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP). The ACAP helps protect the environment and supports local development efforts in the Mustang region.
These permits can be obtained through registered trekking agencies via the Nepal Tourism Board and Immigration offices in Kathmandu or Pokhara. It is highly recommended to secure the permits in advance to avoid delays and start your trip on time. You or your guide must carry the permits throughout the journey and present them at various checkpoints along the Upper Mustang biking route. If you are found cycling without valid permits, you will not be allowed to enter the region, even if you are willing to pay double the cost.
Permit Costs:
During the Upper Mustang Mountain Biking Tour, food and accommodation are provided by teahouses and lodges along the route. These teahouses and lodges offer basic yet comfortable lodging, typically with twin-sharing rooms and shared or private bathrooms, depending on the location and altitude. While lower-altitude areas may provide more modern amenities, facilities become simpler as you ascend. Most teahouses are cozy and offer a welcoming environment to rest after a long day of biking, with opportunities to connect with fellow travelers and enjoy stunning mountain views.
Regarding food, every teahouse and lodge offers a menu, and the food options are generally similar at each stop. Meals are freshly prepared and range from traditional Nepali dishes such as dal bhat (rice, lentil soup, and vegetables) to international options like pasta, noodles, pancakes, soups, and momos. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are usually served at the same teahouse where you stay or at designated lunch stops along the route. Although the cooks are trained, the taste may differ slightly from what you are used to in Western countries. Food prices increase with altitude due to transportation challenges.
Staying well-hydrated and properly nourished is essential for maintaining energy and supporting acclimatization. Riders are encouraged to eat balanced meals, drink plenty of water, and avoid alcoholic beverages, especially at higher elevations and throughout the journey.
During the Upper Mustang Mountain Biking Tour, charging and Wi-Fi facilities are available at most teahouses and lodges, especially in lower-altitude villages. However, these services are usually not included in the room price and often require an additional fee. In some locations, charging is provided through solar power, as electricity sources are limited. It is highly recommended to carry a power bank or a small solar charger to keep your devices powered, particularly in higher-altitude areas where charging facilities can be scarce or unreliable.
Wi-Fi is available in many teahouses, especially in popular villages, but signal strength and speed can be inconsistent, particularly as you gain altitude. In higher areas, such as from Yara Village to Chuksang, Wi-Fi may be weak, very slow, or completely unavailable. Some teahouses offer paid satellite Wi-Fi services, which can help you stay connected, although they may not support heavy data usage.
For better connectivity throughout the journey and added safety, we advise all trekkers to purchase a local SIM card (such as Ncell or Nepal Telecom) with a data package before starting the trip. However, please note that mobile network coverage is also limited in remote, high-altitude sections of the route.

26th January, 2026
I have just finished a 15-day tour in Nepal, including the Upper Mustang Mountain Biking Trip, with the experienced mountain biking guide Jagat.
I contacted Purna to arrange this tour, and he provided clear and helpful information for all the questions we asked. The logistics were excellent, exceeding our expectations, and the service from guide Jagat was first-class. He is the best biking tour guide I have ever had, and I have traveled extensively over the past ten years.
Jagat is one of the most caring and supportive people you could ever meet when you are far outside your comfort zone. Upper Mustang is a very remote region, and as a first-time trekker and biker, I felt completely safe with both the guide and this agency.
The scenery was breathtaking, the mountains were steep, and the nights were very cold, but Jagat was always there with a smile—at breakfast, lunch, dinner, and throughout the biking route.
Thank you, Purna, for a truly memorable life experience. I will certainly contact you again and highly recommend you to my friends when I visit Nepal in the future.
