The Best Time to Visit in Nepal

The best time to visit Nepal depends on the activities you plan to accept and the regions you plan to explore. Nepal experiences diverse seasons, each offering its own unique attractions and considerations. The two main trekking seasons are the pre-monsoon (spring) and post-monsoon (autumn) periods, but other activities like sightseeing and wildlife tours can also be enjoyed at different times of the year.

Spring (March to May):

Spring is one of the most popular times to visit Nepal. The weather is generally warm and pleasant, with blossoming flowers and green landscapes.

This is an excellent time for trekking, as the trails are clear, and the views are stunning. The rhododendron forests are in full bloom, adding vibrant colors to the scenery. Spring is the best time to visit Nepal for expeditions.

Some Nepali Festivals fall in this season such as Nepali New Year, Bisket Jatra, holi and Buddha Jayanti celebrated during this season.

Summer (June to August):

Summer is the monsoon season in Nepal, with high humidity and frequent rain. The southern lowlands and some trekking regions experience heavy rainfall.

While trekking is less popular due to the rain and the possibility of landslides, this is a good time to visit the rain shadow areas of Upper Mustang and Upper Dolpo, which receive less rain.

You can visit cities such as Kathmandu Valley, Chitwan, Pokhara and Lumbini during the summer season.

Autumn (September to November):

Autumn is the other main trekking season in Nepal. The weather is clear, with cool temperatures and excellent visibility. It's considered the best time to visit Nepal for trekking and other outdoor activities.

Trekking trails are at their best, and the skies are often clear, offering breathtaking mountain views. It's also a great time for cultural tours and sightseeing.

Major Nepali festivals fall in autumn.  Dashain (a major Hindu festival) and Tihar (a festival celebrating the bond between humans and animals) are also called light festivals that can be encountered in this period.

Winter (December to February):

Winter is cold, especially at higher altitudes, but the days can be clear and sunny. Mountain views are often at their best due to the dry air.

While some higher-altitude treks can be challenging due to snow, lower-altitude treks like the Everest View Trek, Langtang Valley Trek, and Ghorepani Poon Hill Treks are possible. The winter season is also suitable for cultural tours in Kathmandu, Pokhara and Lumbini and wildlife viewing in places like Chitwan National Park and Bardia National Park .
