The 7-day Gosainkunda Lake Trek offers a short and beautiful adventure in the Langtang region. It is ideal for all types of trekkers, from beginners to adventure seekers, who have limited time to visit Nepal but still want to explore the beautiful Himalayan region. Learn about the itinerary, cost, highlights, and top tips for this sacred alpine lake journey.
The Gosainkunda Lake Trek, also spelled Gosaikunda Lake Trek, is an unforgettable alpine freshwater lake journey known for its magnificent vistas of snow-capped mountains, rich cultural influences, and breathtaking landscapes. Along the way, you’ll pass through tropical and alpine forests filled with rhododendron, orchids, pine trees, and more.
This is a 7-day trek program from arrival to departure in Nepal, taking you to the sacred Gosainkunda Lake, located in the Rasuwa district within Langtang National Park. Gosainkunda is a holy lake in the Langtang region where Hindu and Buddhist devotees gather every year during the August full moon for a ritual ceremony. While it is primarily a religious destination for Hindus and Buddhists, it also captivates other visitors with its natural beauty.
The lake’s crystal-clear waters are formed from melting snow, making them extremely cold. Many visitors still choose to experience its icy touch, believing it to be a way of getting closer to divinity according to religious tradition. Surrounded by pristine natural landscapes, Gosainkunda offers peace and healing for the soul and mind. Its location, right at the foot of towering snow-covered mountains, enhances its splendor.
This trek also introduces you to the diverse cultures of the Tamang, Sherpa, and Hyolmo communities. The Gosainkunda Lake Trek is one of the shortest trekking options in Nepal and is considered relatively easy. However, the rapid altitude gain can cause altitude sickness, so proper acclimatization is important.
The Gosainkunda Lake Trek starts from Dhunche, which is about a 5-hour drive from the historic city of Kathmandu. The trekking begins at Dhunche because there is no further road access beyond this point. The first 45 minutes to 1 hour from Dhunche is a flat trail leading to Ghate Khola. At Ghate Khola, you will cross a river and then ascend for about 2 hours through dense rainforest to reach Deurali.
Deurali is a common lunch stop. After lunch, the trek continues uphill through more rainforest, passing Dimsa before reaching Chandan Bari (also called Shing Gompa) for your first overnight stay. Chandan Bari is home to a famous cheese factory and a monastery, which trekkers can visit.
The next morning, after breakfast at the teahouse in Chandan Bari, the trail gradually ascends through rhododendron and pine forests to Cholangpati. From there, it climbs further to Lauribinayak, taking about 3 hours from Chandan Bari. Lauribinayak marks the tree line, meaning there are no trees above this point. Trekkers usually stop here for lunch.
After lunch, the trail continues uphill to Boudha Temple, a viewpoint offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes and mountains. From Boudha Temple Hill, the path gently ascends and descends toward Gosainkunda, passing several smaller lakes along the way, including Saraswati Kunda and Bhairab Kunda.
The following morning at Gosainkunda, trekkers visit the sacred lake before breakfast and then begin the descent back to Dhunche for the final overnight stay. The next day, you drive back to Kathmandu, ending the trek.
Throughout the journey, trekkers enjoy panoramic views of Ganesh Himal and the Langtang Range, experience diverse cultures, and encounter a wide variety of flora, wildlife, and bird species along the trail. The Gosainkunda Lake Trek is undoubtedly a dream for hiking enthusiasts seeking both the beauty of nature and the thrill of touching the icy waters of a sacred alpine lake. High Pass Adventure Pvt. Ltd. can customize your trek plan according to the time you have available for your holiday.
The 7-day Gosainkunda Lake Trek costs USD 390 per person for a minimum of 2 participants. This price covers the trek from arrival to departure in Nepal and includes all permits, food, accommodation, guide, porter, and transportation during the trek, as well as the office service charge.
Additional costs may include tips for the guide and porter, along with any personal or miscellaneous expenses during the trek. Sometimes, the total cost may vary depending on several factors, such as group size, trek duration, services you choose, luxury accommodation, extra food, hiring a private guide and porter with us, or trekking independently.

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best seasons for the Gosainkunda Lake Trek, as both offer excellent weather conditions for trekking and photography. While this trek can be done year-round, winter and summer present some challenges.
The Gosaikunda Lake Trek is not very difficult, but it requires good health, physical fitness, and strong determination—even for beginners. Trekkers should be able to walk 5 to 8 hours a day on rocky, narrow trails with both ascents and descents in the Nepali Himalayan region.
The best time to trek to Gosaikunda Lake is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). Both seasons offer the best weather for photography and trekking. In spring, the weather is mild, the skies are usually clear, and the rhododendron forests bloom in vibrant colors, making the trail especially scenic. Autumn brings crisp mountain air, stable weather, and excellent visibility of the surrounding Himalayan peaks.
While winter (December to February) brings heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures, it is still possible for experienced trekkers with proper gear. Monsoon season (June to August) is less favorable due to slippery trails, leeches, and frequent rain, but the landscapes are lush and green.
If you wish to avoid crowds and enjoy some peaceful time with nature and culture, winter (December to February) can also be an option. However, the temperatures during this season can be quite cold for most trekkers.
The Gosainkunda Lake Trek is considered easy to moderate in difficulty. The trails include several steep ascents and descents, with the highest point being Gosainkunda Lake (4,380 m). Trekkers should be prepared for long walking days of 5–8 hours and significant altitude gain, which can cause mild symptoms of altitude sickness if proper acclimatization is not followed.
While previous trekking experience is helpful, it’s not mandatory for physically fit individuals with good stamina. The trek requires a reasonable level of endurance and determination, especially when crossing the Laurebinayak and Buddha hill to Gosainkunda Lake. Weather conditions can also add to the challenge, particularly in winter and monsoon seasons.
With proper preparation, adequate acclimatization, the right gear and trek with experienced guide most trekkers find the Gosainkunda Lake Trek a rewarding and achievable adventure.

If you're seeking for the best foreign exchange rates and locations in Nepal, you may easily exchange the majority of your foreign currency at a local bank or authorized money exchange facility in a well-known tourist destination. The Nepal Rastra Bank controls all exchange rates (Center Bank of Nepal). You can exchange small amounts of money at the hotel if you want to. Because our banks will not take dirty or old notes, kindly bring clean and fresh notes.
In order to avoid the time-consuming processes associated with cards and traveler's checks, Nepalese people typically prefer cash in hotels, restaurants, shopping malls, and other locations. You can use an ATM to get cash (in Nepali Rupees) if you have a credit or debit card. In the main tourist city, there are a number of ATM counters with 24-hour service. If you use a card, the maximum withdrawal amount is between 30,000 and 35,000 rupees at once, plus a processing fee of 500 rupees.
You must convert your money in Kathmandu or Pokhara before the hike because the majority of trekking routes do not offer a facility for international currency exchange. Additionally, inquire about the amount of money required for a Himalayan trek from your trekking operator or guide.
When traveling in Nepal, safety and security are crucial issues to consider both on the way to in and out. We are here for you at all times, and we promise to provide the greatest service to all of our cherished clients. Our guides have extensive training in the field of trekking and broad understanding of first aid items. Because it rises more than 4000 m above sea level, it is essential for hiking in Nepal. Because health is crucial, if a trekker becomes ill from the high altitude, our knowledgeable guide discusses the necessary medications and decides to continue the trek while organizing the emergency rescue.
You must be cautious when hiking trails pass one other because they are not wide enough to do so. During the busiest trekking season, there are lots of porters, yaks, mules, and Jokpe along the trail. You must stay on the safe side if you encounter them on a bridge or in a confined space because otherwise they may force you over the edge.
For a healthy body while traveling and staying hydrated, clean water is essential. It will be the most effective method of completing the Himalayan journey. If not, getting sick and having diarrhea is simple. Almost everywhere during the Nepalese tea house trip, but not during the camping trek, sells bottled water. Unfortunately, bottled water is very pricey.
Please bring good water bottles (for boiling water) and water purification tablets or water filter bottles since plastic bottles are detrimental for the environment. Reusable water bottles are a good idea because they help keep the mountain clean. If you are concerned about finding a typical water tap to fill up your bottles in the trekking region of Nepal, they are very simple to locate. It can be found in rivers, streams, and lodges.
Nepal hiking tours: The difficulty levels of the Himalayas range from easy to tough. As a result of the Himalayan climate changing, there is a risk of high altitude and potential mishap.
Trekking in the Nepalese Himalayas demands practical trekking abilities at high altitudes (above 4,000 meters), so travel insurance is essential. If an accident occurs during a trip and requires medical attention or evacuation, the cost of returning to a city and receiving treatment may be significant. Therefore, you must ensure that your insurance covers the price of an air ambulance, medical care, and any risks associated with travel, such as delayed flights and lost, stolen, damaged, or missing baggage. Your complete itinerary while visiting Nepal should be covered by your insurance policy. Make sure your insurance policy covers hikes higher than 5,500 meters. If not, you will be responsible for all unforeseen costs associated with your trek through Nepal.
All trekkers must send a copy of their certificate from their comprehensive travel insurance policy to High Pass Adventure as part of the booking process for trekking and climbing in Nepal.
