Langtang region in Nepal is known for its stunning landscapes, rich culture, and relatively accessible trekking routes. Langtang region, the nearest trekking destination from Kathmandu valley, is located just the north side of Kathmandu valley with towering peaks on either side of the valley and is easily accessible without any need of taking flight. The original starting point for the Langtang trek used to be Dhunche, the main trading post of the area, but with the motor road proximity Shyabrubesi which is only a day's drive from Kathmandu, treks nowadays begin from Shyabrubesi and the usual trek to the upper reaches of Langtang takes four days. Once Ghoda Tabela is reached, the valley opens out and the landscape takes on a dramatic transformation with great mountain views, massive rock overhangs, and waterfalls spilling over from the top. The climbing is finished and an easy hike all the way to Kyanjin Gompa from where you can explore the high valley of Langshisa, Yala peak, and Tserco Ri is started.
The villages of upper Langtang are inhabited by people of Tibetan stock whereas the villages of Dhunche, Bharkhu, and Shyabrubesi are almost entirely inhabited by the Tamang people whose ancestors crossed into Nepal from Tibet, centuries ago. The majority people of Langtang are Buddhists and refrain from slaughtering animals. They earn their livelihood by herding yaks and sheep and their favorite meal is Shyakpa, a delicious mixed vegetable soup-based dish.
Trekking to the Langtang region unveils vivid Buddhist culture, religion, and tradition analogous to that of Tibet. The people of Langtang are believed to be descendants of Tibet who migrated centuries ago. They still follow Tibetan rituals and speak their typical dialects. Moreover, the diversity of topography and climatic zone from subtropical to alpine has created a unique patchwork of vegetation in Langtang. About 25% of Langtang National Park is forested which includes deciduous oak, maple, and evergreen pine, and rhododendron trees.
Langtang region offers a variety of trekking spots including Langtang Valley, Tamang Heritage Site, Langtang Gosaikunda, and Helambu. Since teahouses and lodges are built on most of trails in Langtang and Helambu, this trek can be done in fully tea-house mode. The upper ridge of Langtang is famous for cheese and butter making. Gosainkunda is sacred lake for Hindus and Buddhists that Hindu pilgrims visit every year in August on the occasion of Janai Purnima. Moreover, the Langtang region offers spectacular views of Langtang Lirung, Shisha Pangma, Ganesh Himal, and the Annapurna range. Similarly, this region is equally famous for sightseeing Tamang village, small-peak climbing, and visiting glaciers from comparatively lower altitudes than other trails in Nepal.
