Saribung Pass trek is an adventurous and challenging trekking route located in the Mustang region of Nepal, near the border with Tibet China. It offers a remote and less-traveled experience through stunning landscapes and unique Buddhist cultural encounters. Trekking route to Saribung Pass

The journey starts by traveling from Kathmandu to Jomsom, either by flight or road. Jomsom is the starting point of the trek.  After that, the hiking starts toward the north to the Kagbeni. Kagbeni is a charming village and gateway to Upper Mustang Region for Saribung Pass Trek and also gateway to the restricted area.

From Kagbeni, follow the regular trail to Upper Mustang Trek.  So you will continue your trek to Lo-Manthang through charming villages like Chuksang, Chele, Samar, Geling, Ghami and Charang.  The trail offers you fascinating landscapes and glimpses of Mustang's unique culture.

Lo Manthang is situated at an altitude of around 3,840 meters (12,600 feet) above sea level.  It is a historic and culturally rich village and famous for its unique Tibetan-influenced culture, ancient monasteries, and stunning landscapes. You will explore around the Lo-Manthang village for acclimatize use to cross the Saribung pass.

Afterwards, the trek follows the Damodar Kunda Trekking Trail through Dhi and Yara Villages for Saribung pass, and descends towards the magical hidden valley of Phu after crossing Saribung Pass.

It considers the few challenges to cross the Saribung Pass due to tough terrain and high altitudes, changeable weather conditions and basic mountaineering skills required for crossing the pass. After crossing the Saribung Pass, you will feel achievement for the journey.

Saribung Pass Trek can be done from both sides, either Upper Mustang or Nar-Phu Valley. This trekking route is the regular route for all trekkers but some trekkers can be seen starting from Besisahar (Starting point of Annapurna Circuit Trek) and following the classic Nar-Phu Valley Trek, then ascends to Saribung Pass, and reaching the Mustang Region.

Preparation for Saribung Pass Trek 

Trekking to Saribung Pass trek is gratifying challenging journey; it requires careful preparation to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Saribung Pass Trekking itinerary is longer and tougher than others trekking route due to its remote terrains.  Therefore, Proper physical fitness, acclimatization, basic climbing skills, and determinations are necessary. 

If you don't have the essential previous trekking experience, we highly recommend you having good physical fitness and need preparation to easily complete the Saribung Pass trek, such as normal walking, day hiking, running, biking, jogging, rock climbing and swimming.  These practices are beneficial in preparing for the trekking to Saribung Pass. 

The altitude gain of 6042 meters from the 2743 meters, the journey goes through high-altitude terrains, narrow trail, rocky path and number of ascents and descents. Thus, a good level of physical fitness is essential to maintain 5 to 9 hours of daily walking. Mental flexibility is equally crucial, as self-doubt can often give rise to discomfort and anxiety. Today we will have to leave early in the morning after breakfast from Kathmandu hotel and take a tourist bus to Pokhara. We take an early flight to Jomsom from Pokhara. You will be enjoying the short scenic mountain flight for 20 minutes between the two massif mountain Annapurna (8091m) and Dhaulagiri (8167m). After landing in the Jomsom Airport you will meet your trekking porter and heading to Kagbeni following Kaligandaki River. Kagbeni is the traditional gateway to the Upper Mustang. That day is easy hike and you will enjoy the beautiful Mountain Views and explore the temple, monasteries and Kagbeni Village.

After breakfast, our day is starting by checking the special Upper Mustang Trekking permits and we head in to Mustang Region pass various ridges, Tangbe Village and Chuksang Village. Today is hiking become a bit difficulty as we cross the Samar and Vena settlement on a barren land as well as cross few passes before reached camp. You will have wonderful mountains view and exciting cliff cave, colorful chortens and prayer flag hanging on the pass. Today is bit long hiking day and you will cross two high passes namely Nyi-La (4020m) and Charang-La (3850m) before reached the Camp. After cross the Nyi-la you will get Ghami Village for Lunch and cross the Ghami river and ascending the Charang-La to continue Charang Village. You can see spectacular landscape and panoramic mountain views along the trail. Charang Village is second largest village of Upper Mustang and it was the capital of Mustang before Lo-Manthang.

Today you will reach the final destinations to Lo- Manthang of your trip and it is one of the main highlights of the Upper Mustang Trek. Lo-Manthang was the capital city of the forbidden kingdom of Mustang and there is still wonderful old royal palace. The trekking trail is gentle up and down through barren land with beautiful views of wonderful scenery to get camp. That day 4 hours walk and you will explore beautiful old monasteries in Lo-Manthang.

Today you will explore to Choser Cave which is mysteries place of Upper Mustang Trek. Either you will hire a horse or walk because some trekkers hire a horse to go there. If you like to walk there, only takes 3 hours for one way. The Choser Cave is made by people is long years ago in the cliff. You can explore some of others caves, monasteries and same way back to camp with wonderful landscape.

Today we will trek same way back until Day-La (3950m) and trail moved to south east to Dhi Village. The trail is gradually up and steep descends before reached the Dhi Village. We will have lunch at Dhi Village and trek continues to Yara Village for the overnight. On the way you will see barren land, beautiful landscape, meadows of farming fields and you can find mineral of salty dust before reached the Yara Village.

Today we will leave early in the morning for visit Luri Gompa which is established in the thirteen century. After explore the Gompa, we will back to Yara for breakfast to leave Ghuma Thati.  The trekking trail steep ascend to cross 5000 miters high pass and few hours descend to camp for overnight. We have to take our packed lunch because there is no place to cook lunch.

Best time to Trek Saribung Pass

The best time for the Saribung Pass Trek in Nepal is normally during the end of spring to beginning of autumn seasons, its means trekking in Saribung Pass during the summer will be a great option for those looking to explore this culturally rich and geographically distinct region while avoiding the heavy rains associated with the monsoon season in other parts of Nepal.

Saribung Pass located in the Upper Mustang, Upper Mustang in Nepal is known for its unique rain shadow effect during the summer monsoon season. The region lies in the rain shadow of the Himalayas, which means it receives significantly less rainfall compared to the areas on the windward side of the mountains. This rain shadow effect is particularly pronounced from June to August when the monsoon rains are at their peak in many other parts of Nepal.

While summer is not a suitable time for trekking in some regions of Nepal, it is the most recommended time for the Saribung Pass Trek due to this rain shadow.  The region is situated in a high desert-like terrain and has a unique landscape with red cliffs, eroded canyons, and barren hills, which contrasts with the lush green valleys in other parts of the country during the monsoon season.

Saribung Pass Trek Difficulty
