This segment presents a combination of rough terrain, high altitude, and a technically demanding pass crossing.
Starting from Japanese Camp at around 4,900 meters, trekkers face a significant altitude gain as they approach the Saribung Pass, which stands at 6,042 meters. This quick ascent and reduced oxygen make it a strenuous section, increasing the risk of altitude sickness, so proper acclimatization and a slow, steady pace are crucial.

Loose rocks and scree make footing treacherous, with slippery and uneven surfaces that demand caution. Approaching the pass and descending on the Phedi side require basic mountaineering skills; crampons, ice axes, and ropes are often necessary to navigate icy or snowy areas safely, especially on the steep descent.
This section is also extremely remote, with little infrastructure or support along the way. Once you set out from Japanese Camp, shelter and assistance are limited, so trekkers must be well-prepared with adequate supplies and equipment.

This is especially true along the path from Damodar Kunda to Phedi on the other side of Saribung Pass, where high elevations intensify these conditions. Even during the best trekking seasons, snow and ice may still be present, adding difficulty to the trek. Melting snow often creates slippery and muddy trails, making it crucial to tread carefully near cliffs and steep passes.
It’s also important to walk safely and stay away from riversides, streams, avalanche-prone areas, rock fall zones, glacier regions, and areas near waterfalls, as these can pose additional hazards. By following these safety tips, you’ll ensure a safer trek. Your guide will also brief you on these precautions every day during the Saribung Pass Trek.
