Route of the Full Tenzing-Hillary Everest Marathon (42 km)

The Full Tenzing-Hillary Everest Marathon (42 km) is a high-altitude race that begins at Everest Base Camp (5,364 m) and ends at Namche Bazaar (3,440 m). The initial stretch is particularly challenging due to the high altitude and uneven terrain. The trail descends slightly to Lobuche from starting point, passing through glacial moraines and rocky paths. From there, the route traverses rugged trails, suspension bridges, and picturesque villages such as Thukla, Dingboche, Pangboche, Tengboche, and Kyanjuma. Certain sections are demanding due to steep ascents and descents on rocky paths, requiring runners to carefully navigate the uneven ground. Route of the half Tenzing-Hillary Everest Marathon (21 km)

This route is less challenging compared to the Full Marathon but follows the same path from Dingboche to Namche, passing through Pangboche, Tengboche, and Kyanjuma. Who can participate for this Everest Marathon?

The Tenzing-Hillary Everest Marathon is designed for both experienced runners and adventure enthusiasts, as it is a challenging high-altitude race. Participants are typically between 18 and 65 years old and come from all over the world, along with local runners, particularly Sherpa athletes renowned for their high-altitude endurance. Exceptions may be granted with prior approval and fitness verification. Participants must provide medical clearance from a physician, confirming they are fit for high-altitude activities.

While prior experience in long-distance or trail running is not mandatory, it is highly recommended. Training in high-altitude or mountainous terrain is strongly encouraged. First-time participants must undergo proper acclimatization before the race, allowing their bodies to adapt to the altitude and reducing the risk of altitude sickness. We recommend all participants walk from Lukla to Everest Base Camp, spending nights at Phakding, Namche, Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche, and Gorakshep. Additionally, extra nights at Namche and Dingboche for acclimatization are highly advised to help reduce the risk of altitude sickness.

This representative will escort you from the airport to your hotel in Kathmandu via a private vehicle. Upon arrival at the hotel, you can check in, rest, and freshen up before attending a meeting at our trekking office to discuss the details of your Tenzing- Hillary Everest Marathon Trip program.

You will enjoy breakfast at the hotel and get ready for the Kathmandu Valley tour, starting around 9:00 AM with an experienced tour guide and a private vehicle. The tour will include visits to UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Kathmandu Valley, such as Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Pashupatinath, and Boudhanath—three of the seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the valley. These sites offer fascinating insights into Buddhism, Hinduism, ancient art, historical architecture, and the lifestyle and culture of the people in the Kathmandu Valley.

Our trekking guide will transport you to the domestic terminal of Tribhuvan International Airport in a private vehicle for your flight to Lukla. Once you board the flight, you'll enjoy a scenic 35-minute journey to Lukla with your trekking guide. Upon landing at Lukla airstrip (Tenzing-Hillary Airport), you will meet your trekking porter, who will be waiting for you at the airport.

The trek begins from Lukla, passing through the Pasang Lhamo Memorial Gate and the town of Lukla for Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon. The trail then descends to Phakding Village, passing through Chheplung, Thado Koshi, Ghat, and forests along the way. Along the trail, you'll have wonderful views of mountains such as Kusum Kanguru and Kongde Peak.

From Phakding, the Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon Trip continues northward. You'll encounter a few uphill and downhill climbs, passing through forests of pine and rhododendron, as well as crossing suspension bridges and passing through local Sherpa villages. This path will lead you to Monjo, which serves as the gateway to Sagarmatha National Park for the Everest Base Camp Trek and Everest Marathon. Your trekking guide will manage the entrance fee for Sagarmatha National Park.

Continuing from the Manjo Gate, the trail descends to cross a bridge over the Dudh Koshi River, leading you to Jorsalle village. The trek then continues north, following the river bank and crossing another bridge over the same river until you reach the large Dovan. Here, you'll cross a very high bridge over the river and begin a climb into a forest of pine trees on a zigzagging trail until you reach Namche Bazaar. Before reaching Namche Bazaar, you'll catch your first view of Mt. Everest and other magnificent mountains, offering a glimpse of the stunning scenery to come.

Namche Bazaar is a beautiful town situated at an elevation of 3440m. You'll stay here for two nights to acclimatize to the altitude before continuing further and it is necessary to stay for Everest Marathon for reduce the altitude sickness. During the day, you'll go for a hike to aid in acclimatization. There are two options for the hike: Thame village and Khumjung village. Your trekking guide will decide on the best plan for the hike.

After breakfast, you will visit either Thame Sherpa village or Khumjung Sherpa village. Both hikes offer panoramic mountain views, pine forests, Mani walls, Gompas (Buddhist monasteries), and insight into Sherpa village life. You can also spend your time visiting the National Park Headquarters and Museum or simply relax at your hotel.

After breakfast in Namche, you will follow the trail towards Chhorkang. Walking north, you will pass a memorial chorten dedicated to Tenzing Norgay. From there, you'll be able to enjoy a beautiful panorama of peaks including Kusum Kanguru, Thamserku, Kangtega, Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Everest, Nuptse, and Taboche before reaching Kyanjuma.

From Kyanjuma, the trail descends to the bridge at Phunki Thanga. After crossing the bridge, the trail ascends to Tengboche. If you're lucky, you may spot deer and pheasant birds along the way.

After breakfast in Tengboche, you will visit the renowned Tengboche Monastery. Following your visit, the trek continues towards Dingboche, en route to Everest Base Camp.

The trail descends for about 30 minutes to Debuche, passing through a serene pine and rhododendron forest before reaching a bridge. After crossing the river, the path gradually ascends to Pangboche. From Pangboche, the trail continues to Dingboche, passing through Somare and the Orso Valley. After crossing another river, there is a final ascent before reaching Dingboche.

Along the way, you will be treated to breathtaking scenery, stunning landscapes, and majestic mountain views, making it a truly memorable trekking day.

Acclimatization is essential before heading up to Everest Base Camp for the Tenzing-Hillary Everest Marathon. There are several places for day hikes, such as Nangkar Tsang Hill and Chukung, which provide excellent opportunities to adapt to the altitude. After breakfast, you can opt for a full-day hike to Nangkar Tsang Hill, which offers panoramic views of Mt. Makalu (8,516m), Lhotse (8,556m), Baruntse (7,245m), and other iconic peaks. Alternatively, you can hike to Chukung, which is equally rewarding with stunning vistas of the surrounding mountains. From Dingboche, the trail slowly climbs up to a long ridge through yak kharka, eventually leading you to Dughla knows as Thukla. Along the ridge, you can enjoy views of Taboche, Cholatse, Lobuche, Ama Dablam, and Kangtega. Before reaching Dughla, you will cross a glacial stream.

From Thukla, the trail continues to climb up to the Dughla Pass, where there are numerous memorials to lost climbers and Sherpas. After passing this memorial site, the trail becomes easier as you make your way to Lobuche. If you have extra time, you can either hike up the ridge for a view of the Khumbu Glacier or rest at the hotel.

Today will be a shorter trekking day as you head to Gorakshep, which takes about 4 hours. After breakfast at Lobuche, you will begin your walk, continuing along the trail through the Italian Pyramid area, beside the Khumbu Glacier, and along the terminal moraine.

On the way, you will be rewarded with stunning views of Nuptse, Khumbutse, Changtse, Pumori, and Lingtren mountains. Upon reaching Gorakshep, you can rest to conserve energy and acclimatize to the altitude. Use this time to explore the area, take photographs, and prepare yourself for the Everest Marathon while minimizing the risk of altitude sickness.

On this day, after a late breakfast, you will hike to Kala Patthar (5,545 m) to enjoy stunning views of Mt. Everest and other surrounding peaks. This hike also helps in reducing the risk of altitude sickness ahead of the Everest Marathon. The ascent to the top of Kala Patthar takes approximately 2 hours, and your trekking guide will provide a plan and details for the hike.

From the top, you will be treated to a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view of the golden-lit mountains, a truly unforgettable experience. After soaking in the views, you will descend back to Gorak Shep for lunch.

After lunch, you will pack your belongings and proceed toward Everest Base Camp for an overnight stay. The trail to Base Camp is rocky but rewarding, as it offers mesmerizing views of the Khumbu Glacier and surrounding mountains. Everest Base Camp, surrounded by glacial moraine and ice, provides a remarkable and unique location to spend the night.

After completing the challenging Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon, today will be a shorter, more relaxed trekking day to help you recover.

Start your day with a late breakfast in Namche Bazaar. Afterward, you'll begin your descent downhill from Namche. The trail leads to a large bridge over the Dudh Koshi River, where you will cross and follow the riverbank. The path takes you through forests and past traditional Sherpa villages, offering a tranquil environment to unwind after the marathon.

While the trek usually takes around 4 hours, you may take longer due to the exhaustion from the marathon. It's important to pace yourself, enjoy the scenery, and rest as needed along the way. The day's journey to Tok Tok will allow you to take in the natural beauty of the area and give your body time to recuperate.

Today, after a restful night in Tok Tok, you'll continue your trek towards Lukla, which will take approximately 4 to 5 hours.

The trail gradually descends through scenic forests and Sherpa villages, with occasional views of the surrounding mountains. As you walk, you will cross one suspension bridge over the Dudh Koshi River and few on others river, passing through lush greenery and alpine terrain.

This trek is relatively easy compared to previous days, but you should still pace yourself and enjoy the natural surroundings. The walk will give you a chance to reflect on your Everest Marathon journey and take in the tranquil beauty of the Khumbu region.

After enjoying your last breakfast in Lukla at the end of your Everest Base Camp trek, you will catch a morning flight to Kathmandu from Lukla airport. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, your trekking guide will manage a private vehicle to transfer you to your hotel.

First, you take a flight to Lukla, and after arriving, you'll begin a 10–14 day trek to Everest Base Camp to properly acclimatize and prepare for the marathon.
