Hiring a guide and porter for the Makalu Base Camp Trek is essential for a safe, well-organized, and inspiring journey, especially due to the region’s remote location, challenging terrain, high altitude, and limited infrastructure. A professional guide ensures proper navigation, assists with permits, provides valuable insights into local culture and biodiversity, and offers critical support in high-altitude areas. They also manage logistics such as food, accommodation, and transportation. Meanwhile, an experienced porter lightens your load, allowing you to fully enjoy the trek’s dramatic landscapes, including breathtaking views of Makalu (8,485m), the fifth-highest mountain in the world. Hiring a guide and porter not only enhances your overall experience but also ensures your safety and comfort, turning this adventurous Himalayan journey into an unforgettable experience.
The Makalu Base Camp Trek is a moderate to challenging and less-traveled journey that takes you into the heart of Makalu-Barun National Park—one of Nepal’s most pristine and remote trekking regions—and to the base of Mount Makalu (8,485m), the world’s fifth-highest peak. The trail winds through stunning natural landscapes and traditional Sherpa and Rai villages, offering rich cultural encounters and a glimpse into the unique mountain lifestyle. Starting from Tumlingtar, the route gradually ascends through diverse ecosystems before reaching the rugged and isolated base camp of Mt. Makalu. Due to its remote location and demanding terrain, this trek requires excellent physical fitness, proper acclimatization, and careful planning. The Makalu Base Camp Trek is perfect for adventurous trekkers seeking solitude and the opportunity to explore one of the last untouched corners of the Himalayas.
When planning the Makalu Base Camp Trek, several factors affect the total cost, including accommodation, permits, meals, transportation, guide and porter services, and other extra expenses. If each cost is calculated separately, the total may appear higher than the full-package price. Therefore, we highly recommend that trekkers opt for a full-package option for a more affordable, hassle-free, and well-organized experience. For our standard itinerary, the total cost is USD 1550 per person, based on a minimum of two participants.
Please note that the cost may vary depending on group size, trek duration, transportation preferences, and the level of service you choose. Below is a general cost breakdown:

The Makalu Base Camp Trek requires two types of permits and the cost is different from the nationality: the Makalu Barun National Park Permit and the Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) Permit. These permits are mandatory to ensure the safety and security of trekkers throughout the journey. The permit costs are as follows:
Makalu Barun National Park Entry Permit
TIMS (Trekkers Information Management System) Card
The starting and ending point of the Makalu Base Camp Trek is Tumlingtar. You can reach and depart from Tumlingtar either by flight or a long drive by road. Transportation costs vary depending on the type of vehicle or travel option you choose. So you can choose based on your budget and time. The estimated costs are provided below:
During the Makalu Base Camp Trek, you'll stay in lodges and basic teahouse accommodations at higher elevations, with meals typically provided at the same places. While the facilities are simple and slightly more expensive due to the remote location, the overall costs for accommodation and meals are generally reasonable for such a remote area. Compared to the Annapurna and Everest regions, food and lodging are more basic but slightly more expensive.
Accommodation:
Meals:
The total cost depends on how much you eat, so it's recommended to budget around USD 20 to USD 30 per day for food, including breakfast, lunch, dinner, and one cup of tea with each meal.
To be safe, you should plan for a daily food and accommodations budget of USD 30 to USD 40 per person.
In addition to the basic trek budget mentioned above, there are several extra costs to consider during the Nar Phu Valley Trek. Hot showers, Wi-Fi, and device charging are typically not included in the accommodation cost.
We highly recommend bringing a power bank or a small portable solar panel for charging your devices. It's also wise to buy a local SIM card for phone calls and internet access, and to limit hot showers to save money.
Drinking water, hot beverages (like coffee, hot chocolate, lemon ginger tea), juices, and alcoholic drinks are more expensive in remote areas. Prices vary depending on the item, but usually range from NPR 200 to 700 per item.
Additionally, you may want to donate to monasteries or offer small contributions to tea houses, and it’s customary to tip your guide and porter.
Because of these extras, the overall cost of the Makalu Base Camp Trek may appear higher than expected, so it's important to plan accordingly.
The Makalu Base Camp Trek starts and ends in Kathmandu, so hiring a guide from Kathmandu is highly recommended to ensure a hassle-free trekking experience. A guide from Kathmandu will accompany you from the beginning to the end of the trek, supporting all logistics throughout the journey.
Some trekkers choose to hire a guide from Tumlingtar in an attempt to reduce costs. However, this often results in higher charges because local guides in those areas have limited work opportunities and may demand more. In contrast, guides from Kathmandu are highly experienced, regularly engaged in trekking and well-trained to provide better overall service.
The Makalu Base Camp trekking route is located in a remote region in the northeastern part of Nepal, southeast of Mount Everest. It is one of the less-traveled trails, where trekkers must walk through traditional villages, dense forests, and dry, rugged landscapes, with altitudes ranging from 1,000 meters to 5,000 meters.
The trail can be challenging, especially due to frequent ascents and descents at both low and high elevations. Walking with a heavy backpack in such conditions can be difficult, so hiring a strong and reliable porter is highly recommended for anyone trekking to Makalu Base Camp.
A porter helps carry your gear, easing the physical load and allowing you to enjoy the trek more fully. Porters don’t just carry your bags—they often bring a cheerful spirit to the journey, adding to the overall enjoyment of the experience.
With a porter, you’ll be able to walk freely with just a light daypack, making it easier to take photos, enjoy side trips, and truly appreciate the beauty of the region. Overall, hiring a porter enhances your trekking experience and helps create lasting memories.
High Pass Adventure offers a variety of guides for the Makalu Base Camp Trek to suit your budget. The cost varies depending on the type of guide you choose, such as Licensed/Certified Guides, Guide-cum-Porters, and Porter-cum-Guides.
If you are a first-time trekker in Nepal planning to do the Annapurna Circuit Trek, hiring a licensed/certified guide is highly recommended. A second option is a guide-cum-porter—someone who both guides you and carries a small portion of your belongings.
You can also hire a porter-cum-guide for a more budget-friendly option. A porter-cum-guide leads the trail and carries your luggage, typically up to a certain weight limit. For a hassle-free and enriching trekking experience, we highly recommend hiring both a guide and a porter for the Makalu Base Camp Trek, allowing you to fully focus on enjoying the journey.

After breakfast in Num, the trekking trail leads to Seduwa. From there, the trail descends steeply to the Arun River, which you will cross via a suspension bridge before heading uphill to Seduwa. Although the temperature is warm due to the low altitude, the walk remains pleasant as much of the trail passes through shaded forest. Along the way, you’ll see traditional Nepali houses and terraced farmland. Seduwa marks the beginning of the Makalu Barun National Park, and your trekking guide will arrange the entrance permit for your entry into the park.
After breakfast in Seduwa, you will head to Tashigaon. From Seduwa, the trekking trail begins to ascend northeast toward the Kusuwa Khola. After crossing a wooden bridge over the Khola, the trail passes through beautiful villages, farmland, and lush green forest to reach Tashigaon. Along the way, you can enjoy stunning views of green hills, forests, villages, and terraced farmland. Tashigaon is the last permanent settlement on the way to Makalu Base Camp.
From Tashigaon to Khongma, the trekking trail continues to ascend steadily. Today’s hike may feel more challenging due to the gain in altitude and the steep climb through lush forest and yak, buffalo, and sheep pasturelands. Trekkers should be well-prepared for this ascent by having a hearty breakfast in Tashigaon. Along the trail, you may spot wildlife and birds, and enjoy impressive views of the surrounding mountains.
Today will be a challenging yet rewarding day, as you will cross two high mountains passes to reach your final destination. The first is Keke La Pass (4,100 m), followed by Sipton La Pass (4,150 m), with both ascents and descents along the way. You’ll witness the beautiful Kalo Pokhari (Black Lake) and numerous massive rocky mountains to the north, along with snow-capped peaks. From Dobato, the trail enters a new region known as the Barun Valley.
From Dobato, the trekking trail gradually descends to Barun Khola through colorful rhododendron and pine forests. From Barun Khola, you will follow the river upstream into the upper valley toward Yangla Kharka. Yangla Kharka is a relatively flat and green area, though it has only a few teahouses available for trekkers’ accommodation. Today’s walk is relatively easy, allowing you to enjoy the lush scenery and possibly spot some wildlife along the trail.
Today, the trail heads northwest into the Barun Valley, passing through small bushes and lush Himalayan forests on the way to Yak Kharka. This section marks the beginning of the tree line, where the landscape transitions into barren highlands. You will cross several wooden bridges over mountain streams. Along the way, trekkers can enjoy magnificent views of the Himalayas, as well as sightings of wildlife, yaks, and Himalayan birds. Walking across the windy highlands offers a true high-altitude trekking experience.
Today is the final day of our trek to reach Makalu Base Camp. After breakfast at Yak Kharka, you will continue following the Barun Khola and glacier toward the base camp. Although the hike is not very long, it can feel challenging due to the high elevation and the rocky, barren trail. Upon reaching Makalu Base Camp, you will have plenty of time to enjoy the stunning views of Mount Makalu and the surrounding landscape.
This day is dedicated to exploring the area around Makalu Base Camp and the upper base camp to enjoy magnificent views of the south face of Everest and Lhotse, the north side of Makalu, and Mount Makalu itself. Hiking at this elevation also offers a true high-altitude trekking experience. After visiting these places, you will return to Makalu Base Camp for an overnight stay to conserve energy for the descent tomorrow.
After breakfast at Makalu Base Camp, you will begin an easy descent back to Yangle Kharka for an overnight stay, where you already spent one night on Day 8. On the way down from Makalu Base Camp, you will enjoy wonderful views of the mountains and surrounding landscape—some of which you may have missed on the way up.
Today will be a long trekking day to reach Tashi Gaun from Yangle Kharka. The trail includes one major ascent and a long descent. After breakfast, you will begin your trek back to Tashi Gaun via Dobato, Kalopokhari, and Khongma. Since you've already walked this route on the way up, it may not be necessary to stop for photos, but you might still spot some wildlife and birds along the way. You'll stop for lunch at Khongma and then continue descending to Tashi Gaun for an overnight stay.
Today is also a long journey involving both walking and driving to reach Tumlingtar. After breakfast at Tashi Gaun, you will continue trekking back to Num via Seduwa and cross the Arun River. The trail descends steeply until the river, and after crossing it, you’ll ascend back up to Num. From Num, there is a road to Tumlingtar, so we will take a vehicle for the drive to Tumlingtar for an overnight stay. This day will be exciting, as it marks the final day of the trek. You’ll celebrate the end of the journey with your porter, since you will return by flight and the porter will travel back by land—so it will also be time to say goodbye after the celebration.

Having a guide can greatly enhance your trekking experience, ensure your safety, and make your journey more comfortable and hassle-free.

The Makalu Base Camp Trek starts and ends in Tumlingtar. To reach Tumlingtar, trekkers can travel either by flight or by land (bus). The flight takes approximately 35 minutes, while traveling by road takes around 10 to 14 hours.
In our standard itinerary, we include flights as the mode of transportation because they are faster and more convenient for traveling to and from Kathmandu. Although traveling by public bus is cheaper than flying, it takes significantly longer and can be tiring. We recommend saving your energy and time for the Makalu Base Camp Trek itself.
You can choose the type of transportation based on your budget, timeframe, and travel preference.
Yes, all trekkers need permits to do the Makalu Base Camp Trek because the route is located inside the Makalu Barun National Park. Therefore, you must obtain a Makalu Barun National Park entry permit.
In addition, you will need a Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) card. The TIMS card is required for the safety and record-keeping of trekkers, guides, and porters.
The Makalu Base Camp Trek is considered a moderate to challenging trek due to its high altitude, steep and rugged terrain, long trekking distance, unpredictable weather, and remote location. The trek also involves crossing high mountain passes such as Ke Ke La and Shipton La, both over 4,000 meters, and reaching Makalu Base Camp at approximately 5,000 meters, which can pose altitude-related risks.
Therefore, this trek requires prior trekking experience. Hiring a licensed guide and a strong porter is highly recommended. It is also important to follow a well-planned itinerary with proper acclimatization days.
Trekkers should be physically fit, mentally prepared, and determined. By following these guidelines, you can successfully complete the beautiful Makalu Base Camp Trek safely and confidently.
The Makalu Base Camp Trek typically takes 13 days according to our standard itinerary, from Kathmandu to Kathmandu. However, you should allow at least three additional days for your arrival and departure in Kathmandu, as well as a buffer in case of delays due to weather conditions.
The total duration can be shorter or longer depending on your preferred itinerary, timeframe, trekking pace, chosen route, extra acclimatization days, and starting or ending points.
During the Makalu Base Camp Trek, the daily walking duration is typically 5 to 9 hours for average trekkers. However, this may vary depending on your fitness level, group size, trekking experience, terrain, elevation, and weather conditions.
The itinerary and daily walking hours are designed to be suitable for most trekkers undertaking the Makalu Base Camp Trek.
The Makalu Base Camp Trek is very safe when you hire a guide, especially during the spring and autumn seasons. However, without a guide, the trek can be risky due to the remote location, challenging trails, fewer trekkers, and high-altitude terrain.
Hiring a guide from High Pass Adventure is highly recommended, as we prioritize your safety and security. Our guides handle all essential aspects of the trek, including preparing necessary trekking gear, leading you along the correct trail, arranging accommodations, meals, permits, and transportation, and providing support to prevent altitude sickness.
They also assist in emergencies, such as transport delays or health issues, ensuring a safe and smooth experience throughout the Makalu Base Camp Trek.
The total cost of the full package for the Makalu Base Camp Trek, following our standard itinerary, is USD 1,550 per person, based on a minimum of two participants. This includes food, accommodation, permits, transportation, guide, and porter services, covering your stay in Kathmandu and 13 days of trekking to Makalu Base Camp.
However, the cost may vary depending on factors such as group size, trek duration, type of transportation, selected services, or if you prefer to hire only a guide.
Accommodation along the Makalu Base Camp Trek is limited, and teahouses or lodges are not available at every stop. The facilities are basic, unlike more popular trekking routes such as Everest, Annapurna, or Langtang. In some areas, homestays are available, usually with twin-sharing rooms and common bathrooms shared with other guests. Rooms typically include a simple bed with a mattress, blanket, and pillow. At higher elevations, facilities become even more basic, so it is highly recommended to bring a sleeping bag for extra warmth and comfort.
Toilets and showers are limited and usually shared with other trekkers.
Teahouses along the route offer a variety of local and some international dishes, though options are more limited than in cities. You can enjoy local foods such as chapati, rice with dal (Dal Bhat), potato dishes, tsampa porridge, Tibetan bread, Sherpa stew, momo (dumplings), thukpa, noodles, and thenduk. However, at higher elevations, only basic food items are available.
Internet service is not available at most teahouses above Khongma along the Makalu Base Camp Trek, including Dobato, Yangle Kharka, Langmale Kharka, and Makalu Base Camp. In some locations, there may be slow internet service, but we cannot guarantee its availability. Where internet is available, you may need to pay an extra fee.
We advise you not to expect reliable internet access during the trek, as connections are usually slow and may only work on clear days. Mobile phone network coverage is similar—available in some parts of the route but often weak, especially for mobile data. In higher areas, both internet and mobile networks frequently do not work properly.
In case of an emergency, our guide will help you communicate with your family, friends, or colleagues.
Yes, you can charge your electronic devices at teahouses and lodges along the Makalu Base Camp Trek. However, in some places, you may need to pay an extra fee, while in others it may be free. Charging is usually not available in the rooms, and above Tashi Gaon, electricity comes from solar panels. During the busy trekking season, especially at higher elevations, it can sometimes be difficult to find a charging point or reliable electricity. Charging outlets are typically located only in the dining hall, and many trekkers share these facilities.
Therefore, we recommend bringing a power bank or a small solar panel to charge your mobile phone, camera, or other electronic devices.
Yes, you need travel insurance, as it is mandatory for trekking and climbing in Nepal. The same rule applies to the Makalu Base Camp Trek because the route passes through remote areas at high elevations, and you will be traveling far from home. Travel insurance is essential for your safety and peace of mind.
It is crucial to ensure that your insurance policy adequately covers the highest elevation of your trip (up to 5,000 m) and includes provisions for emergency evacuation, lost belongings, flight delays, and any necessary medical treatment.
High-altitude sickness, also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), is a common concern when trekking to higher elevations, especially if you are coming from low-altitude areas with a different environment. While it is not possible to completely eliminate the risk of altitude sickness, you can follow these guidelines to help prevent it and successfully complete the Makalu Base Camp Trek:
Yes, you should bring basic recommended medicines such as paracetamol, painkillers, and medication for diarrhea, sprains, sore throat, and other common ailments for your trip to Nepal, including the Makalu Base Camp Trek. The trekking route is remote, and medical facilities are very limited along the way.
It is better to bring your own medicines, as local medications may not always be suitable for foreigners due to differences in climate and environment.
If you have any allergies or pre-existing medical conditions, it is important to consult a healthcare professional before your trip. They can advise you on the appropriate medications based on your health and the trekking altitude.
Yes, tipping your guide and porter is customary and highly appreciated, as they play a crucial role in ensuring the successful completion of the Makalu Base Camp Trek. They act like heroes, assisting and supporting you throughout the journey.
Expressing gratitude through tipping is an important way to acknowledge their exceptional service and dedication, which helps make your trek an unforgettable experience. Your kindness will not only be well-received but also motivate them in their future work with other trekkers.
We recommend tipping your guide and porter as a token of appreciation for their invaluable assistance and contribution to your trekking adventure. Normally, the recommended tip is USD 10–15 per day for each guide and porter.

The best time to trek to Makalu Base Camp with a hired guide and porter is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons.
Spring, the post-winter season, brings warmer temperatures and blooming rhododendrons that add vibrant colors to the landscape. The weather is generally clear, offering excellent mountain visibility, and the trails come alive with lush vegetation.
Autumn, the post-monsoon season, features stable weather, clear skies, and mild temperatures, making trekking comfortable. This season also offers stunning views of the surrounding peaks, and the trails are dry and ideal for trekking. During both seasons, the weather is generally free from heavy rain and snowfall, and temperatures are neither too hot nor too cold—making it perfect for trekking and photography.
Winter and summer are not recommended for the Makalu Base Camp Trek due to the region’s remoteness and harsh conditions. In summer, heavy rainfall can cause landslides, slippery trails, and poor visibility, making trekking dangerous. In winter, snow around Ke Ke La and Shipton La can make crossing difficult and may delay your itinerary.
Therefore, choosing the right season and hiring a guide for the Makalu Base Camp Trek is highly recommended. A guide can help navigate challenging conditions, ensure safety while crossing high passes, manage logistics, and enhance your overall trekking experience.

Best Guide to Hired for the Makalu Base Camp Trek
29th July, 2025
My husband and I decided to do the Makalu Base Camp Trek, but we only wanted to hire a guide and porter through High Pass Adventure. They provided us with an excellent and experienced trekking guide, along with a strong porter. They also arranged all transportation and permits, while we paid for our own accommodation and food along the trek.
The accommodation and food along the route were basic but clean enough. Our guide, Purna, was knowledgeable and attentive to our needs, and the locals were friendly and welcoming.
The first part of the trek was remote—we saw fewer than 30 tourists—but the views were still spectacular! In the second part of the trek, we reached the more popular Makalu Base Camp, which is a gateway for climbing Mt. Makalu. There were more people, and we met many friendly fellow trekkers along the way.
I would highly recommend the High Pass Adventure to anyone considering Makalu Base Camp Trek and adventurous trip to Nepal!
