Experience the best of the Annapurna region on the Ghorepani Poon Hill with Mardi Himal Trek—ideal for nature lovers seeking panoramic mountain views and diverse landscapes.
The Ghorepani Poon Hill with Mardi Himal Trek is one of the best trekking destinations in the Annapurna region of Nepal, suitable for all age travelers year-round. This combined trek offers an incredible experience, blending breathtaking Himalayan views, cultural villages, and less crowded trails compared to the Ghorepani Poon Hill and Annapurna Base Camp Trek.
The Ghorepani Poon Hill with Mardi Himal Trek serves as an excellent alternative to the Ghorepani Poon Hill and Annapurna Base Camp Trek. While the Annapurna Base Camp route can be crowded with limited accommodation options, the combined Ghorepani Poon Hill and Mardi Himal trail offers ample lodging and a more flexible itinerary. Along this route, trekkers will find numerous tea houses and restaurants approximately every hour, providing convenient places to rest and dine.
During this trek, the highest overnight stay is at 3,620 meters, with the trek's highest point reaching 4,500 meters, offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. The trail leads through lush forests, allowing trekkers to experience diverse wildlife and bird species, attractive the overall trekking experience.
There are two routes that can be combined for the Ghorepani Poon Hill with Mardi Himal Trek — the Ghorepani Poon Hill route and the Mardi Himal route. You can start with either Ghorepani Poon Hill or Mardi Himal, depending on your preference. However, our itinerary begins with the Ghorepani Poon Hill trek.
The Ghorepani Poon Hill with Mardi Himal Trek starts with a scenic drive or a wonderful mountain flight to Pokhara, followed by a two-hour jeep drive to Hile. From there, the trek begins through the beautiful Annapurna Conservation Area, passing through Magar and Gurung villages and walking in lush green forests.
From Hile village, the trekking trail gently ascends to the Thikhedhunga River, and then begins a steep ascent on stone steps up to Ulleri, which takes approximately 2.5 hours. Along the trail, trekkers can enjoy views of South Annapurna. The next day, from Ulleri village, the trail continues to ascend towards Ghorepani. The route begins with about one hour of walking through the Magar village until the end of Banthanti, and then enters a beautiful forest of oak, rhododendron, pine, and bamboo, eventually reaching Ghorepani with in four to five hours.
From Ghorepani Poon Hill, the trekking trail leads to Tadapani, passing through Deurali and Banthanti, while walking through lush green rainforest.
From Tadapani, one trail leads to Annapurna Base Camp and another to Ghandruk for the Mardi Himal Trek. The descent from Tadapani to Ghandruk takes around 3 to 4 hours. From Ghandruk, the trail descends to the Modi Khola via Sewai and then ascends to Landruk village. From Landruk, one trail goes to Dhampus, and the another leads to Mardi Himal. To reach Mardi Himal from Landruk, the trail ascends continuously through lush green rainforest until Forest Camp. From Forest Camp, the real Mardi Himal trekking route begins.
The trail then ascends past Rest Camp, Low Camp, and Badal Danda through beautiful rhododendron forests, eventually reaching Mardi High Camp. From Mardi High Camp, the trail descends either to Dhampus or Lwang, but this itinerary ends at Dhampus Phedi, from where you return to Pokhara, and then travel back to Kathmandu the next day.
The Ghorepani Poon Hill with Mardi Himal Trek is a great alternative to the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Trek. Both routes showcase the stunning beauty of the Annapurna region but offer different trekking experiences within a similar duration.
The combined Ghorepani Poon Hill and Mardi Himal Trek is a moderate-level journey, suitable for all types of trekkers. It provides more accommodation options, a safer trekking route, and a more diverse experience. This trek is ideal for those looking for panoramic sunrise views from Poon Hill and close-up encounters with Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) from Mardi High Camp and other nearby peaks. It blends traditional cultural villages, lush rhododendron forests, and scenic ridge-line walks with less risk of altitude sickness.
On the other hand, the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Trek is a moderate to challenging route that leads into the heart of the Annapurna Sanctuary. It offers a dramatic amphitheater of towering peaks and a more immersive high-altitude trekking experience. However, the section of the trail between Himalaya Lodge and Machhapuchhre Base Camp is known to be avalanche-prone, especially since it passes through a narrow valley. Additionally, accommodation is limited between Sinuwa and Annapurna Base Camp, making it difficult to find rooms during the busy trekking seasons.
While both treks are rewarding, the Poon Hill–Mardi Himal combination is perfect for those seeking variety, flexibility, and easier access with plenty of lodging options. In contrast, the ABC Trek is better suited for experienced trekkers aiming for a deeper venture into the Himalayas with a focus on reaching the iconic Annapurna Base Camp.
High Pass Adventure warmly welcomes you to Nepal at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA). A member of our team will be waiting for you outside the baggage hall, holding an A4-sized paper with your name and our company name.
This representative will escort you from the airport to your hotel in Kathmandu via a private vehicle. Upon arrival at the hotel, you can check in, rest, and freshen up before attending a meeting at our trekking office to discuss the details of your Ghorepani Poonhill and Mardi Himal Trek program.
After breakfast, we will depart from the hotel in Kathmandu at around 8:00 AM, as the flight is scheduled for 9:30 AM. Our guide will arrive at the hotel on time to accompany you to the airport. Please note that flights may occasionally be delayed due to weather conditions or air traffic. The flight duration is approximately 25 to 30 minutes.
Upon arrival at Pokhara Airport, we will drive directly to Hile by a reserved public jeep, which takes about 2 to 3 hours. Our porters and assistants will be waiting for us there. We will have a lunch break in Hile, and after lunch, we will begin our trek to the next destination.
The initial part of the trek is quite challenging, as the trail involves a steep ascent on stone steps for a couple of hours to reach Ulleri. Ulleri offers stunning views of the hills and mountains, along with the chance to visit traditional Magar villages.
Today's trekking route leads to Ghorepani and takes approximately 5 to 6 hours. This day can also feel a bit challenging, as the trail involves a steep ascent for a couple of hours, followed by a gradual climb. The total ascent is approximately 800 meters. Despite the challenge, the climb rewards you with stunning views of hills and mountains, as well as the chance to pass through Magar villages in begabers and lush green forests at ends.
After breakfast, you will leave Ulleri and begin your journey toward Ghorepani. Along the trail, there are several local restaurants where you can stop for tea, coffee, lunch, or snacks. We strongly recommend carrying at least 2 liters of water, as the trek can be strenuous and you are likely to sweat a lot.
Poon Hill (3,210 m) is one of the best sunrise and sunset viewpoints for the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. Typically, all trekkers head to Poon Hill early in the morning, before breakfast, to witness the breathtaking sunrise over these majestic peaks. The 2-kilometer-long hiking trail takes approximately 1.5 hours and can be challenging due to the early start and high elevation.
After enjoying an unforgettable time at Poon Hill, you will return to your hotel in Ghorepani for breakfast. Afterward, the journey continues to Tadapani, passing through beautiful forests of rhododendron, oak, bamboo, and pine, while crossing scenic spots like Deurali and Banthanti. You will have a lunch break at Banthanti.
Along the trail, there is also a chance to spot wildlife such as deer and langurs (white monkeys). Tadapani offers stunning views of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Hiunchuli, and Annapurna South, making it an ideal place to spend the night.
On this day, you will enjoy breakfast with stunning views of Machhapuchhre and Annapurna South. It will be a short walking day, as you trek from Tadapani to Ghandruk (1,970m), which takes about 3 to 4 hours. The trail descends through a beautiful rhododendron forest, passing by Bhaisi Kharka. Along the way, you may spot wildlife such as deer, langurs (white monkeys), and a variety of birds.
Upon arriving early in Ghandruk, you will have lunch. Afterward, you will have plenty of time to explore this fascinating Gurung village, visit the local museum, and enjoy a relaxing hot shower.
Today, the trekking trail will feel long and challenging due to a combination of descents and ascents. After breakfast in Ghandruk, the trail descends to the Modi River and then climbs up to Landruk village, which takes about 3 to 4 hours. Upon reaching Landruk, you will have lunch.
After lunch, the trail continues through a beautiful forest. You will hike uphill through forests of rhododendron, oak, hemlock, birch, and bamboo until you reach Forest Camp. From there, you can enjoy stunning views across the deep valley toward Ghandruk. This section is especially beautiful in the spring season when the forest is filled with blooming flowers. The trek from Landruk to Forest Camp takes around 3 hours.
After breakfast, we will head to Low Camp, which is situated at 3,050 meters. This is a good place to acclimatize before heading to higher elevations. From Forest Camp, the trail continues to ascend through the forest, though some sections are gradual and gentle, making the climb more manageable. The trail passes through moss-covered trees, creating a wonderful wilderness experience, and along the way, you may also have the chance to spot wildlife and birds.
It takes about 4 to 6 hours to reach Low Camp, where you will arrive in time for lunch. After lunch, you can explore the surrounding area, although the place itself is quite small. From Low Camp, you can also enjoy excellent views of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail).
Today, we will leave after an early breakfast for the hike to High Camp. The trail climbs gradually through a beautiful forest of moss-covered trees until we reach Badal Danda, which takes about 2 to 3 hours. Here, you can take a short break and enjoy stunning views of the surrounding mountains, including Annapurna and Machhapuchhre.
If you prefer to walk at a slower pace, Badal Danda is also a good place to have a lunch break while enjoying the wonderful mountain and hill views. After lunch, we will continue along the ridge toward High Camp. This part of the trek offers breathtaking views along the ridge, providing a perfect opportunity to acclimatize naturally.
From High Camp, Annapurna South appears so close that it almost feels like you can touch it, while the Annapurna Range and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) also seem impressively close.
Today is a special day as we hike up to Mardi Himal Base Camp. Although the hike is beautiful, it can feel a bit challenging due to the higher altitude. Some trekkers prefer to leave before breakfast, while others choose to leave after. However, we recommend starting early, before breakfast, to enjoy the stunning sunrise over the Annapurna mountain range and the surrounding peaks.
When you reach the base camp, you will feel as if you've arrived in heaven, surrounded by breathtaking views. After spending an incredible time there, we will return to High Camp for breakfast or lunch, depending on the timing.
In the afternoon, we will retrace our steps back to Badal Danda, following the same trail.
Today will be a lovely day, walking along the ridgeline through the forest as we make our way back to Deurali from Badal Danda. The trek takes about 5 to 7 hours in total. Along the trail, there are enough restaurants and teahouses where we can stop for lunch.
This day also offers opportunities to spot wildlife and birds, and from some viewpoints, you can enjoy beautiful mountain views.
At Deurali, this will be your final trekking day with your guide and porter. It’s a great moment to celebrate the successful trek together and distribute tips to show your appreciation for their hard work.
After a late breakfast, you will leave for Pokhara. The trekking trail descends all the way to Dhampus Phedi, but we will stop at Dhampus village for lunch. After lunch, we continue descending to Dhampus Phedi.
From Dhampus Phedi, we will board our vehicle for the drive to Pokhara, which takes about 1 hour along a scenic road.
Pokhara is a beautiful city where this trek both starts and ends. Here, you can enjoy a refreshing shower, indulge in delicious food, and relax in this stunning lakeside city. If you wish, you can also explore the vibrant attractions of Pokhara City.
Today, you will have a late breakfast, as you may feel tired after completing the 10-day Ghorepani and Mardi Himal Trek. After breakfast, around 8 to 9 AM, we will depart from the hotel and transfer to the airport by private vehicle for your flight back to Kathmandu.
Upon arrival in Kathmandu airport, our staff or guide will transfer you to your hotel in Thamel. After arrival in Kathmandu hotel, you can rest at the hotel after the long drive. In the late evening, you will be invited to a farewell dinner at a Nepali cultural restaurant, where you can enjoy traditional music and dance performances.
Today marks the last day of your trip to Nepal. One of our High Pass Adventure staff members will accompany you to Kathmandu International Airport for your flight departure.
If you wish to plan an additional trip to Nepal or return for another adventure, we are always here to assist you with your next journey and adventure activities.

The best time to trek Ghorepani Poon Hill with Mardi Himal is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons, which also applies to most treks in the Nepal Himalayas. These periods offer the most favorable weather conditions for trekking, with stable and mild daytime temperatures, clear skies, and longer daylight hours, making for a comfortable and enjoyable experience.
Spring is particularly beautiful, with vibrant rhododendron blooms and lush greenery along the trail, while autumn is known for its crystal-clear mountain views, including stunning panoramas of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. Although nights can be a bit chilly at higher elevations such as Ghorepani and Mardi High Camp, the temperatures are much milder than in winter.
While the beginning of September to the end of May is generally considered an excellent time for this trek, proper preparation is still necessary during the winter months (December to February) due to colder temperatures and possible snowfall at higher altitudes.
The monsoon season (June to August) is not recommended for this trek, as heavy rainfall can lead to slippery trails, leeches, and poor visibility. However, some experienced trekkers still venture out during this time, provided they are well-prepared for wet and humid conditions.

To reduce the difficulty level for first-time trekkers, it is important to build physical fitness in advance through regular activities such as walking, swimming, running, and cycling. You must carry these permits with you or have your guide carry them throughout the entire trek and present them at every checkpoint along the trekking route. There are plenty of accommodations available along the trekking trail to Ghorepani Poon Hill and Mardi Himal, as the new trekking route passes through lower regions where more houses and rooms are added for trekkers every year. So, you can easily find comfortable places to stay.
However, during the peak trekking seasons, it can be difficult to find the best rooms on some days. To avoid this issue, your guide will reserve accommodations in advance.
Typically, teahouses offer twin-sharing rooms with a common bathroom, although some locations have rooms with attached bathrooms, but these are limited. The rooms usually come with a comfortable mattress, pillow, and blanket, but bringing a sleeping bag is highly recommended.
Teahouses also offer hot showers and Wi-Fi for an additional fee. Charging electronic devices is usually possible for a small fee, but it's recommended to carry a power bank or small solar panel for convenience.
Food is primarily provided by the teahouses along the trekking route. Every teahouse has a menu, and the food options are generally similar at each location. You can choose meals from the menu according to your preferences and dietary needs.
Most teahouses grow fresh vegetables in their gardens and serve them to guests, especially at lower altitudes. The cooks are usually trained and able to prepare all menu items, but the taste may differ from typical Western cuisine.
Being vegetarian is highly recommended during the trek, as it is safer and more suitable for the region. However, obtaining fresh food can be challenging in remote locations, so expectations should be adjusted accordingly.

The trekking guide and porter are essential to the success of your trip, ensuring it runs smoothly and without issues. Therefore, tipping is an important part of trekking in Nepal, as it shows appreciation for the hard work of the local staff who assist you throughout your journey.
It is customary to tip at the end of the trek. You should gather all team members—guide, porter, and assistant guide—together to distribute the tips. Tips are generally given in cash, preferably in US dollars or Nepalese rupees, and it’s best to use small denominations to make distribution easier.
As a general guideline, tipping around 10% to 15% of the total package cost is customary if you purchase a full package. If not, a tip of $10 to $15 per day per person is recommended. You can adjust this amount based on the quality of service provided.
These tips are highly encouraged to motivate the team and reward them for their outstanding service, contributing to a memorable and inspiring trekking experience.

Best Annapurna Trek - Ghorepani Poon Hill with Mardi Himal Trek
25th June, 2025
I have done the ABC, EBC, and Annapurna Circuit Trek multiple times with Purna. He took me on different routes, including the Ghorepani Poon Hill with Mardi Himal Trek, which was truly wonderful—I did it twice! Purna, the owner of High Pass Adventure, created the perfect itinerary for me, tailored to my needs. He guided me throughout the trek, making sure we were well, enjoying ourselves, and learning about the countryside and local culture. The food was absolutely delicious at every teahouse we stayed in, and the accommodations were very satisfying. We reached our destinations, and despite the weather, Purna timed everything perfectly so we could capture some of the most breathtaking views at Mardi Himal Base Camp and Poon Hill. I cannot recommend Purna and his company highly enough. Thank you for a life-changing adventure!
