Traveller Useful Information

Best Time to Go on the Kathmandu to Lhasa Motorbike Tour

The best time to go on the Kathmandu to Lhasa Motorbike Tour is from mid-April to October. During this period, Tibet generally experiences stable weather, clear skies, comfortable temperatures, and excellent visibility, making it the ideal season for a motorbike adventure.

Riders can enjoy breathtaking views of the Himalayan mountain ranges, pristine lakes, vast Tibetan plateaus, and spectacular landscapes under deep blue skies. The pleasant weather also provides excellent opportunities for photography and sightseeing. In addition, travelers may have the chance to experience traditional Tibetan Buddhist festivals and visit ancient monasteries along the route, adding a rich cultural dimension to the journey.

The winter season (November to February) is generally not recommended because of freezing temperatures, strong winds, snowfall, and icy road conditions, which can make riding difficult and less enjoyable.

March is also not a suitable time for international travelers, as Tibet is typically closed to foreign tourists during this month due to the region's annual travel regulations and administrative restrictions.

For the safest riding conditions, the best mountain views, and the most enjoyable overall experience, mid-April through October is the ideal time to undertake the Kathmandu to Lhasa Motorbike Tour.

Types of Motorbikes for the Kathmandu to Lhasa Motorbike Tour

Choosing the right motorbike is essential for a safe and enjoyable Kathmandu to Lhasa Motorbike Tour. We recommend using a high-quality adventure motorbike with an engine capacity of 450–500 cc or above. While the brand is a matter of personal preference, the motorcycle should be reliable, comfortable for long-distance riding, and easy to maintain in remote areas.

The route covers long distances, varied terrain, high mountain passes, and elevations above 5,000 meters, requiring riders to travel 200–300 kilometers per day. A powerful and well-maintained motorbike provides better performance, stability, and comfort throughout the journey.

Motorbikes with smaller engines or poor build quality are generally not suitable for this expedition, as they may struggle with steep climbs, high-altitude conditions, and the demanding road surfaces. Choosing a dependable adventure motorcycle greatly enhances both safety and the overall riding experience.

Can You Ride Your Own Motorbike in Tibet?

Yes, you can ride your own motorbike in Tibet if you bring it to Nepal from your home country. However, your motorbike must have all the required registration and ownership documents, as these are necessary to obtain the permits required to enter Tibet.

Before the tour begins, we will arrange the necessary permits for both the rider and the motorbike. If your motorcycle does not have the proper legal documentation, it cannot be taken from Nepal into Tibet.

To ensure a smooth border crossing, we recommend sending us copies of your motorbike documents in advance so we can verify that everything is in order before applying for the required permits.

Travel Permit and Visa Requirements for Entering Tibet

All travelers joining the Kathmandu to Lhasa Motorbike Tour must obtain a Tibet Travel Permit before entering Tibet. This permit is issued by the Tibet Tourism Bureau (TTB) and is mandatory for all foreign visitors.

The Tibet Travel Permit cannot be applied for individually. It must be arranged through a registered travel agency, such as High Pass Adventure. To apply for the permit, we first prepare your travel itinerary and submit a copy of your passport to the Tibet Tourism Bureau. Once the application is approved, the bureau issues the Tibet Travel Permit.

After receiving the permit, we use it to apply for your Chinese Group Visa. The visa application requires your original passport, the completed visa application form, and the approved Tibet Travel Permit. The Chinese Group Visa is issued as a separate paper visa specifically for travelers entering Tibet from Nepal.

High Pass Adventure will assist you throughout the entire permit and visa application process, ensuring that all required documents are prepared correctly for a smooth and hassle-free journey.

For diplomatic passport holders, journalists, professional media photographers, and government officials, the Tibet Travel Permit is not required for applying for a Chinese visa. These travelers can apply directly for a Chinese visa through the relevant foreign affairs authorities.
