Best time to visit Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

The best time to visit the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is from May to September. These months offer the most favorable weather conditions for the journey. Although this period coincides with the monsoon season in Nepal, the region around Mount Kailash in Tibet lies in a rain shadow area, resulting in dry and stable weather with clear skies and comfortable temperatures.

During this time, daytime temperatures range from 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F), while nights are cooler but not freezing. This makes the trek around Dolma La Pass more manageable and safe, with less risk of weather-related disruptions, making it an ideal time for trekking and performing the sacred Kora (circumambulation) of Mount Kailash.

From October to April, the yatra is not recommended due to harsh winter conditions. Temperatures often drop well below freezing, and snow and ice make both driving and trekking extremely difficult. Many parts of the route become inaccessible during these months, making the pilgrimage unsafe and impractical.

We highly recommend planning your Kailash Mansarovar Yatra during the May to September window to ensure a safe, comfortable, and spiritually fulfilling journey, while fully experiencing the natural and cultural beauty of the region.

Who Can Do Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?

All travelers between 18 and below 70 years of age with a valid passport (minimum 6 months validity)—including Indian citizens, Nepali citizens, and foreign nationals—can go the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. The journey includes long drives through remote highlands as the route lies in the high-altitude barren lands of Tibet, China and a challenging 3-day Parikrama (circumambulation) of Mount Kailash at altitudes exceeding 5,630 meters. Therefore, a good level of physical fitness, a positive mindset, and strong determination are essential, especially for participants with prior trekking or high-altitude experience. Due to the extreme elevation, those with heart conditions, respiratory issues, or other serious medical concerns must consult a doctor before attempting the yatra. Travelers should also be prepared to handle minor medical issues independently in remote areas with limited healthcare access. This pilgrimage is suitable for individuals who are physically fit and well-prepared.

 It is especially recommended for:

  • Spiritual seekers and devout followers of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Bon traditions
  • Trekking enthusiasts interested in high-altitude adventures
  • International travelers seeking a unique blend of cultural and spiritual experience

However, the yatra is not recommended for:

  • Pregnant women
  • Young children
  • Elderly individuals with fragile health
  • Anyone with serious medical conditions
